Hello and welcome to this week's edition of the Wildern Weekly from the First Aid team.

I am Mrs Buckley and I have worked in the First Aid room for nearly 6 years and you will find me here on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Miss Budden joined the team last summer and is in First Aid all week except Tuesdays, where she works in Student Services.

We are qualified first aiders who support students' wellbeing and health. We administer daily medication and monitor ongoing health care needs, from complex to minor illnesses. The role is very varied and we see a great number of students daily. We maintain a record of all illnesses and incidents and report any concerns.

Alongside this we coordinate the teenage vaccinations, which are carried out by the South west immunisation team.

We also support students' mental health by working closely with students, the pastoral team and outside agencies and liaising with Student Services who offer wellbeing drop in sessions.

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s health and wellbeing please do get in touch.

Summer Uniform: Following feedback from students and parents we have made a change to our uniform for the summer months, in order to best support students on hot days and to support families with the cost of school uniform.

  • If the temperature is 28°C or hotter, students will be able to wear their PE kit to school instead of their usual uniform. We now have our own weather station based at Wildern and the forecast from this will be used to determine if we move to PE kits. We will let students and parents know via email, Insight and social media if this is the case.
  • We also have stopped the need to purchase branded summer shirts and students will be required to wear a tie throughout usual uniform days in the summer. Students who already have branded summer shirts are welcome to wear these but they will need to wear a tie with these at all times from now on please.

Ramadan: Celebrating diversity at Wildern we are proud to be supporting our students observing Ramadan. If your son or daughter requires access to the prayer room for quiet reflection, or prayer - or if we can support in any other way, please contact Miss Pine in Learning Support.

In 1973, the school became a comprehensive school and was call “Wildern Comprehensive School”. At the same time the school leaving age was increased to 16 years old. This meant that the schools intake increased from 228 students in 1972 to 291 students in 1973. Instead of 8 tutor groups there was an increase to 10 tutor groups. The school’s population overall grew from 980 in 1972 to 1120 in 1973.

Feedback

“Feedback redirects or refocuses the learner’s actions to achieve. It can be verbal or written, or can be given through tests or via digital technology. It can come from a teacher or someone taking a teaching role, or from peers. Feedback has a high impact on learning outcomes.” (Education Endowment Foundation)

At Wildern, feedback takes many forms:

  • Quizzes: Students regularly complete retrieval quizzes. Quizzes help students identify what they know and what they don't.
  • Whole Class: Whole class feedback allows time for students to edit and improve their work as well as correct misconceptions.
  • Symbols: Teachers will use common feedback codes in their subjects to help students transfer feedback across different pieces of work and topics. They make the process quicker and more interactive
  • Verbal Feedback: Students receive verbal feedback in their lessons all of the time – this could be a question, a feed forward comment or…
  • Modelling: Teachers will often share a model of what students are aiming for. We use our visualisers for this all of the time.

Supporting your child – students must REACT to their feedback

What our students do with the feedback they receive is the most important thing.  Green pens are really important; all students should have a green pen with them every day.  This is how our students know they are reflecting on the feedback they have received.

Green pen work could include: redrafting, responding to a question, researching (to fill any gaps in knowledge), repeating a skill, rehearsing, reapplying or re-doing a skill or activity.

Does your child receive regular feedback from their teachers on how to improve their work? Please let us know here.

Supporting Positive Mental-Health & Wellbeing Over the Easter Break

This link to a collection of Apps that are designed to support young people, adults and families with their mental health and well-being. Some of these do need a paid subscription to use them while others have been made freely available. There is also a huge wealth of information and support on the Wildern Wellbeing Hub.

Helping young people to take down nudes shared online

Using the Report Remove tool

When a young person loses control of a nude image of themselves, it can be very distressing. It's important that young people don't feel judged when this happens and you should reassure them that they haven’t done anything wrong. A young person aged under 18 can use the Report Remove tool to see if the image or video can be taken down, and Childline can provide further support. Find out more in our video below.

See our sexting briefing to learn more about how to respond appropriately to incidents

ratio

How it works

Report Remove can help to take down nude or sexual images that include at least one of the following:

  • nude or semi-nude sexual posing
  • someone nude or semi-nude touching themselves in a sexual way
  • any sexual activity involving a child
  • someone hurting someone else sexually
  • sexual activity that includes animals.

Remember, you should never view the image.

Even if you’re not sure whether an image or video will be removed, it’s important to support the young person use the tool. The list above is only an indication of the type of images and videos that might be removed. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) will assess the image and try to remove it if they can. Young people can also choose to access emotional support from Childline during the process.

Using the tool

Children and young people can access Report Remove on the Childline website. They then follow three steps:

  • Follow the instructions to confirm their age. They may be asked if they want to prove their age using ID.
  • Log in or create a Childline account. Childline will let the young person know the outcome of their report and provide further support where needed.
  • Submit the image or video. A specialist analyst at IWF will review it and work to have it removed if it breaks the law.

See full information about Report Remove on the NSPCC website

Over the last week our student leaders have been giving tours to parents who wish to visit the school during our Open Mornings. This time our Transition Leaders have taken the role as they are particularly interested in helping other students transition smoothly into life at Wildern. It is a real privilege to be able to take such pride in our school and let others in to see all the fantastic things we do and have here.

The Head Student interviews took place on Wednesday and Thursday. The announcements will be coming out this week about which students were appointed to these prestigious roles! We are very excited about what this new team will bring to improving our school community!

Please remember, they can adapt the majority of meals to any dietary needs if they know in advance (your child can speak to them by visiting the kitchen before 8:30am that day). Main/grill vegetarian options are always available - just ask Dan and his team.

What Parents and Carers Need to Know about NGL

NGL is another of those ‘bolt-on’ apps which is designed to work alongside a major social media network. In this instance, the ‘host’ platforms are Instagram and Twitter – with NGL (meaning, as you may have surmised, ‘Not Gonna Lie’) inviting a user’s friends and followers to ask them questions anonymously. An intriguing novelty, perhaps – but also not without risk.

Human nature being what it is, some people take the smokescreen of online anonymity as an excuse to behave in ways that they certainly wouldn’t if their identity were visible. The idea of exposing young social media users to anonymous messages is one which understandably concerns many parents: our guide brings you the facts about NGL. This free online safety guide looks at NGL – an anonymous messaging app. This guide will highlight a number of potential risks including oversharing, cyber-bullying and potentially costly subscription fees.
