Hello everyone and welcome to this edition of the Wildern Weekly. My name is Beth Rooney and I am the Director of Learning for English.
My role here at Wildern is to oversee all things progress and curriculum based within the English department, ensuring that we meet the needs of all our students at every point over their 5 year journey with us.
I am privileged to work with a team of over 20 dedicated, passionate and knowledgeable practitioners who work incredibly hard to secure the best outcomes for their students. We work together to deliver our English department vision of 'Independence, Resilience and Curiosity', in which we strive to deliver a rich, diverse curriculum that encourages students to ask questions of themselves and the world around them, while equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to navigate the evolving demands of the 21st century.

On a personal note, I believe that English is a study in humanity, and take particular joy in watching our students relate to the characters in the texts that we study, identifying and exploring their thoughts, emotions and motivations, often learning more about themselves in the process. From Shakespeare to Stevenson, we are uniquely placed to investigate the complexity of the human experience, and encourage our students to evaluate the ways that language is used to shape our responses to the pivotal texts we study.
On behalf of my team, it is our pleasure to work with your children and to share our subject with them.

In Nov 1977 on a Sunday morning, a violent gas explosion followed by fire severely damaged one of the Biology labs within school. The cost of the damage was estimated at £3,000. In 1978, there was a fire in the Science prep room between Science labs one and two. Thankfully, this was minor and school was able to open as usual.

Sustainability and Eco Focus group update
Sustainability and green issues are a real passion of the Wildern School’s Eco Focus Group, they appreciate the access they have to a green school site and want their fellow students to care deeply for the environment they live in.
This spring, the Eco Focus Group has had a busy few weeks on the biodiversity front, being one of the three areas of focus for the Green Flag Award we aim to achieve this year. The students led Year 8 eco reps for each tutor group recently in tree planting with the local Rotary Club’s support and the creation of wildflower beds across the school site.
Our tree planting in November went well, with the saplings now taking root and producing leaf buds for spring. Eco group also met with representatives from Friends of Wildern Local Nature Reserve and discussed how we can protect wildlife and habitats across the school site, to enable nature to retain a green corridor throughout the Hedge End area.
Across the school site we have also had new blue outdoor ‘recycling’ bins installed, for which Eco Group have produced posters to highlight the ways in which they should be correctly used. The reduction of litter across the school site and minimising of plastic waste is a real concern to the students, so much so they are organising further litter picks, both after school and at the weekends in June so that parents and their children can actively support keeping our wildlife and green spaces pollution free.

Exam season can be a challenging time for young people. Many feel stressed in the lead-up to their exams and worried in anticipation of their results. As adults, it can be difficult to know what we can do to support children and young people during this time. Place2be is an organisation who focus on improving children's mental health and they have created some tip sheets full of practical advice to help young people and families manage stress during exam season.

Following the recent prefect tie and badge presentations we began investing in our new student leaders with their first training session. Mr Knight helped them overcome the sheer bewilderment of having a tie that they actually have to tie themselves! His helpful and humourous tie-tying session gave our young leaders about 5 different ways of mastering the art for a variety of occasions!
Training then included some team building activities, considering the job role and responsibilities, and dreaming up what we want to achieve in partnership together and what we would love student leadership to become. We did this by creating idealistic and hope-filled news-style headlines, such as “A School with a Difference: students making change for the better” and “Charity Donations at Peak” and "New prefect team highers standards.”
The aim of student leadership is to make potential reality, and part of that has to be about investing in and training those who step up to the plate so they can leave a legacy.

What Parents and Carers Need to Know about Fortnite Chapter 4
If you know any young gamers, you’ll almost certainly be familiar with Fortnite. It’s one of the most popular video games on the planet – up alongside other mega-hits like Minecraft, Roblox and Call of Duty in terms of its sheer number of fiercely dedicated players. Fortnite currently has more than 400 million devotees worldwide – around 25 million of whom play it every day.
Given Fortnite’s relatively young user-base, though (as many as one in four pre-teens are reported to have played the game, despite its PEGI 12 age rating), it’s prudent not to conflate immense popularity with absolute safety. Our guide assesses the latest version for potential pitfalls that parents and carers of young Fortnite fans should be aware of.
In the guide you'll find a number of potential risks such as compulsive playing, audio chat with other gamers and in-game spending.
