Welcome back to a warm and sunny Summer Term 2! My name is Nicky Anderson and I am the Director of Learning for Communication Studies. Communication Studies is a relatively new faculty which encompasses IT, Computer Science, Business Studies, and Media Studies.
As a team of dedicated teachers, our shared aim is to enable our students to think critically and creatively to become the driving force of innovation in the future.
In the week leading up to half term, we welcomed in reporters and a content editor from ITV News Meridian who provided a valuable insight into the production of the nightly news broadcasts and an exploratory approach to careers in journalism and broadcasting. The Year 9 Media Students present in the workshop were then able to ask their burning questions, and of course there was time for a few selfies with the reporters at the end!
The end of May also saw our annual Year 7 trip to Bletchley Park where students participated in a Cyber Security workshop and learnt about Facial Recognition Software. Following the workshop, a tour of Bletchley Park enabled students to see the model of the Bombe Machine - a recreation of the original device used to crack the enigma codes! This trip is always a fascinating day out of the classroom, witnessing the relevance of computing in a real life context.
If you have any queries regarding your child’s progress or attainment in any of the Communication Studies subjects, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s subject teacher or myself and we will be more than happy to discuss this with you.

For once the weather was with us for Half Term and most welcome. Over Half Term Year 11 students continued to work hard by attending Half Term revision session onsite in a variety of subjects and their exams continue this week. Year 8 students enjoyed the various outdoor activities in Wales on a residential trip.
Since we have returned to school the good weather is continuing, just a reminder that students need to continue to wear their ties but jumpers do not need to be worn but should be in their bags. We now have four external water fountains to fill up onsite they are located: Behind the WAVE, by the Main Hall parasols, Block 2 Bike Sheds and between Blocks 3 & 5. There are also internal water fountains in the Red Dining Hall, DART and Block 2. Bottles can only be filled up before/after school or Break or Lunch.

We have finally started to see some beautiful summer weather and wanted to take the opportunity to remind you about our hot weather uniform policy.
When the temperature hits 28 degrees we give all students the opportunity to come into school in their Wildern PE kit.
This can be:
- Wildern green polo shirt
- Wildern green shorts
- Wildern black polo shirt
- Wildern white polo shirt
- Black leggings
- Trainers
- Suitable socks for footware
This list covers every item of PE kit and students are not allowed to wear any other types of clothing. If students arrive in school in inappropriate clothing, parents will be contacted as per our usual uniform policy.
We will alert you to hot weather uniform the day before and update this on a day to day basis. As we all know the weather is very changeable and this will not be a blanket uniform change for the entire summer period.

What Parents and Carers Need to Know about Telegram
With more than 700 million users worldwide, Telegram is a popular alternative to the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger; indeed, in some countries, it’s overtaken that pair to become the most-used instant messaging app. Telegram’s no stranger to controversy, however, and has occasionally been made unavailable for download in some nations (including the UK).
There are various reasons for these suspensions, but the primary trigger for the authorities’ concern has been that Telegram’s robust encryption, sadly, all too often encourages the app’s use as a conduit for extremist political material and illegal sexual content. Our guide this week brings trusted adults the lowdown on Telegram.
In the guide you'll find tips on a number of potential risks including a lack of age verification, inappropriate content and cyber-bullying.
