¡Hola! Bienvenue à Wildern Weekly. My name is Mr Russell and I am the Director of Learning for Modern Foreign Languages here at Wildern. Learning a new language is an experience like no other and opens up opportunities throughout young people’s lives. We are proud to offer students a choice of three languages, French, German and Spanish.
There are many opportunities within MFL to expand your horizons. We offer a language leader programme for students and a number of international visits, including trips to Spain, Cologne Christmas Markets and an Exchange with our Partner School in Germany that has been running for over 40 years.
The question that I am asked the most is how can I help my child with their progress in languages. This can be really challenging when you haven't learnt the language before, but our self study programme ensures that students have all the help that they need to practise at home, and we ask that they show you what they are working on and that they practise regularly.
This month sees the launch of our new self study and revision platform for Key Stage 4, GCSEPod. All year 9 and 10 students will be finding out how to get the most out of this support package. It contains videos explaining all areas of the GCSE course and additional practice questions and activities. We will continue to use Memrise alongside this to help students expand and embed their vocabulary. As now, students in years 7 and 8 will continue to alternate self study tasks on Memrise and Sentencebuilers.com. If students are having difficulty logging in, they should speak to their class teacher.
If you have any questions about language learning at Wildern, please do get in touch.
Danke schön.

It has been a hot week at Wildern which has seen us focus on healthy living in assemblies. Trips out this week have gone to Southampton University wih the MFL department and The Natural History Museum with the Year 9 Education for Life students. We have also had the Year 7 Spelling Bee, Year 9 Parents' Evening and KS3 Cooking club making amazing Acai Bowls. Cricket and athletics fixtures in 28c of heat and ICT focused on stopping cyber bullying.
We now have four external water fountains to fill up onsite they are located: Behind the WAVE, by the Main Hall parasols, Block 2 Bike Sheds and between Blocks 3 & 5. There are also internal water fountains in the Red Dining Hall, DART and Block 2. Bottles can only be filled up before/after school or Break or Lunch. Therefore students may benefit from bringing multiple bottles in.
Finally a reminder that Friday 30th June is a CPD day and the school will be closed to all students.

We have finally started to see some beautiful summer weather and wanted to take the opportunity to remind you about our hot weather uniform policy.
When the temperature hits 28 degrees we give all students the opportunity to come into school in their Wildern PE kit.
- Students can ONLY wear
- Wildern green polo shirt
- Wildern green shorts
- Wildern white polo shirt
- Black sports leggings
- Wildern Black GCSE Dance t shirt and black leggings
- Trainers
GCSE PE students ONLY have a black PE kit and therefore only those students taking GCSE PE can wear:
- Wildern GCSE PE black polo shirt
- Black loose fitting PE shorts
This list covers every item of PE kit and students are not allowed to wear any other types of clothing. If students arrive in school in inappropriate clothing, parents will be contacted as per our usual uniform policy.
We will alert you to hot weather uniform the day before and update this on a day to day basis. As we all know the weather is very changeable and this will not be a blanket uniform change for the entire summer period.

I'm worried about potential bullying...?
|
Parents sometimes contact us to ask what they can do to support their child who may have fallen out with others or who are reporting unkind behaviour from others. Lorraine Lee has been a Professional Parenting Practitioner in Hampshire for over 15 years. We are delighted to share with you a video she has produced for us to support you if your child is going through a difficult time with others.
The Anti-Bullying Alliance and its members have an agreed shared definition of bullying based on research from across the world over the last 30 years. It is the repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power. Bullying can be physical, verbal or psychological. It can happen face-to-face or online’.
If you feel that your child may be on the receiving end of bullying behaviours please do make contact with your child's tutor in the first instance. We are working hard in school to raise awareness, stamp out bullying behaviours and unless we know about it we cannot support them appropriately. If you feel the issue is not resolved or continues please then contact your child's DOPA. We are here to help!

What Parents and Carers Need to Know about Anime
Anime is one of the most popular forms of media in the modern world. Fans span across multiple generations – with a particular emphasis on young people in the west, to whom the unique art style and over-the-top presentation greatly appeal. It takes many different forms – from movies to video games – but is most commonly presented in TV shows.
The cartoonish art style of anime can lead people to assume that all media of this type is child-friendly. While a good amount of anime fits this description, there’s just as much – if not more – that centres around deeply adult themes and topics, with scenes of extreme gore, disturbing horror, and sexual content. Our guide delves deep into this cultural phenomenon, identifying all risks parents and carers should be aware of.
