Wildern School 90th Banner Strawberry Flowers in the 90th Design of light green and red

Parent Bulletin                                                                                                                           Friday 30 June 2023

I have enjoyed working at Wildern for 15 years. My Wildern journey first began in 2009, when I was appointed as a Design & Technology class teacher. I was new to teaching and benefitted from the vast support and opportunities available at Wildern. During my time at Wildern I have taken on additional roles as subject leader for Engineering, Second in department for D&T, and eventually becoming Director of Learning in 2016. My role involves leading a wonderful team of specialists teachers in Food and Nutrition, and Design & Technology. The subject has evolved since the days of CDT/home economics. The department now uses a vast amount of new technologies, including laser cutters and 3D printers. However, we at Wildern still believe passionately in the role that traditional skills have, alongside the modern day technologies that exist. We are lucky at Wildern to have such a large team of specialist subject teachers, who are passionate about their subject. As part of my role as Director of Learning I oversee not only the curriculum, but also the progress of each student.  Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you would like to.

Mr J. Smith (Director of Learning for Design & Technology)

Also last Friday, 48 students went on their practice expedition for their DofE to the New Forest.

Recent events @ Wildern

A big well done to all the Year 10 Business Studies students who took part in the Business Enterprise Challenge that reached its finale last Friday. The students have worked very hard over the past few months preparing their fundraisers and sales. Together, the students raised nearly £550 for the Turkey and Syria Earthquake relief fund. Events that took place included sweet sales, penalty shootout competitions, teachers karaoke, hot snacks, jewellery sales, flower bomb sale and soaking the teacher!

On Thursday we welcomed the new year 7 students to the Wildern family at their Year 6 Induction day/evening

Also last Friday, 48 students went on their practice expedition for their DofE to the New Forest.

Sunscreen and sun safety

Advice for adults and children on sunscreen and sun safety in the UK and abroad.

Sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer. Sunburn does not just happen on holiday. You can burn in the UK, even when it's cloudy.  There's no safe or healthy way to get a tan. A tan does not protect your skin from the sun's harmful effects.  Aim to strike a balance between protecting yourself from the sun and getting enough vitamin D from sunlight.

Sun safety tips
Spend time in the shade when the sun is strongest. In the UK, this is between 11am and 3pm from March to October.

Make sure you:
* spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm
* never burn
* cover up with suitable clothing and sunglasses
* take extra care with children
* use at least factor 30 sunscreen

What Parents and Carers Need to Know about Money Muling

Criminal organisations digitally ‘launder’ the illegal profits of their operations (including scams and drug deals) by moving funds through innocent-looking accounts, which makes it harder for the police to track. To achieve this, they often recruit young people – money mules – who are trusting enough to be taken in by their advances and simply see an easy way to make some cash.

These impressionable youngsters are sometimes approached to take part in person – but more commonly it happens through social media, where the criminals use euphemistic titles like ‘money transfer agencies’. Our guide takes a look at this emerging online hazard, highlighting how trusted adults can help to protect young people from money muling.
