Parent Bulletin                                                                                                                           Friday 8th September 2023

Welcome to a new academic year! What a fabulous start we have had and it started on GCSE results day when we welcomed back and celebrated with last year's Year 11. They were really pleased with their outcomes and we wish them well for their next steps...wherever that takes them!

Back to the present time, firstly, the weather has been incredible - a pity that this wasn't in August - and it makes such a difference starting back with the sun out.

Secondly, our Year 7 and 11 students have impressed us with their positive attitude to the transition sessions they have received.

Thirdly, our 'Meeting Me' sessions have been extremely helpful and informative in order that our tutors are able to continue to forge strong relationships with your child(ren) and yourselves, signpost any support that may be necessary and also ensure that key information is shared with the relevant people.

It has been a fantastic start to the year. I suspect that many students tonight will be really tired after all the information they have been given and the learning that has once more started - I know we are as teachers!

Next week, the weather looks more like the September temperatures we are used to and so it is normal uniform as outlined in the letter sent out in June. Any problems with this, please contact your child's tutor/DOPA in order that we can support.

We are looking forward to, once more, a really successful year, working alongside you.

Mrs Oakley

Congratulations to our Anti Bullying Ambassadors and Diversity Focus Group, who through their commitment to reduce bullying and improve wellbeing for our students, have helped us achieve the United Against Bullying BRONZE School status. This is not an easy award programme and we are incredibly proud of what they have achieved!

We are committed to raising awareness about bullying, stamping out bullying behaviours and supporting students who may be experiencing this. We look forward to sharing with you the work we are doing as school regarding bullying throughout the year.

The DfE has been helping education settings and responsible bodies (such as local authorities and multi-academy trusts) to identify and manage the potential risks of RAAC since 2018. You can find more in the Education Hub article published by DfE.

We appreciate the concern this may raise, and we will always prioritise the safety of your children and our staff.

We do not have any confirmed RAAC in our buildings and have not been asked to close any areas. However, we want to take care and to be sure, and are currently working with the DfE.  If RAAC is identified, we will let you know straight away, and we have contingencies in place

Nut Allergies - important information

The beginning of the academic year is a good time to remind ourselves that a number of students and staff at Wildern have severe allergies to nuts. It is imperative that there is a strict avoidance of this food in order to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction and we ask that students and staff do not bring nuts into school to support our safe school environment.

Any exposure to nuts may cause a life-threatening reaction that requires emergency medical treatment. To help reduce the chance of this happening we ask that you do not send your child to school or on school trips with products containing nuts.

We appreciate your support with these procedures.

Hampshire County Council has shared a campaign encouraging families to do all they can to support regular school attendance for their children.

While rates of school attendance are improving locally, there is still more to do to match the levels typically seen before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Educational specialists advise that attending school every day, unless unwell, is best for children to ensure that the solid foundations for their future education and employment can be laid. It is also one of the best ways of protecting a child’s mental and physical health.

Regular attendance requires parents and carers, children, and school staff to work together. Staying connected with schools means parents and carers can quickly identify any potential difficulties their child may be facing and understand the support available. Families can take various steps to support school attendance, including:

creating opportunities for children to talk about their time at school

staying up to date with all communications from school

attending school open evenings and functions, and letting the school know if this is not possible due to barriers like work, childcare, transport, or health issues

checking that children understand and are regularly completing their homework, and speaking with their child’s school if they or their child are encountering issues with completing the homework that has been set

avoiding school absences where possible – for example, by arranging GP and dental appointments outside of school hours

building consistent bedtime routines – sleeping well, for the right length of time, helps improve energy levels, mood and concentration

establishing good morning routines at home to help children arrive at school on time, having had a good breakfast and ready to start the day

staying alert to signs of distress or challenging behaviours in response to going to school, and reaching out for help as soon as possible if there are any concerns

The County Council’s website provides advice and guidance on school attendance including parental responsibilities; how schools record attendance; and what to do if a child is unwell or expected to be away from school for a long period of time.

If you are concerned about or would like to speak to us about your child’s attendance please do contact your child’s tutor in the first instance.

That’s why we’ve created this useful guide for children outlining various online safety do’s and don’ts to help empower them to make the right decisions when interacting with the online world.
