Parent Bulletin          Friday 15th September 2023

Parent Bulletin                                                                                                                           Friday 15th September 2023

Welcome to the second Wildern Weekly of the year

It has been a fantastic week here with lots happening around the school site as everyone settles back in.  We had three fun filled days of Hiller's team building trips for Year 7 and a successful Carers and Further Education & Alternate Pathways evening onsite on Thursday for Year 11.

We would like to inform you that the school will be starting at 10am for all students on Friday 29 September.

This is to ensure all areas across school are cleared following our Open Evening. All students will go straight to their P2 lesson when they arrive where they will be registered.  To ensure the safety of our students it is important that students are not on site before 9:50am as they will not be supervised by staff who will be ensuring classrooms are ready for a prompt start at 10am.  We thank you for your support with this.

There is lots of information today so please take your time to check the communication section and especially for Year 11 students the Careers section click here.  If your son or daughter is also involved in this years school show "Little shop of Horrors" please see the rehearsal schedule in the communication section

We do use our social media accounts to remind parents and students but the Wildern Weekly is our main communications strategy to have in one place everything you need to know for the coming weeks.

We would very much like to gain some feedback from you regarding recent Meeting Me sessions that happened last week for Year 8 - 11 students please click here

This week the MFL department welcomed our new Foreign Language Assistants to the team. Miss Mulugani from France and Miss Zama from Spain will be working with students from all years in class, building their confidence in speaking in French and Spanish and learning more about life abroad. Students can come over to block 1 on Wednesdays or Fridays at break to meet them!

Lastly if your son or daughter has any new health conditions please remember to contact us to provide more details.  Please email firstaid@wildern.org

Recent events @ Wildern

We have noticed a significant increase in the traffic and parking in the roads surrounding the school, particularly at the end of the school day.

May we ask that you are respectful to our neighbours when parking to ensure they are able to enter and leave their properties at all times. The safety of our students is paramount, so please do not park on double yellow lines, particularly at the top of Allen Road and Westward Road, or stop on the zig zag markings. May we also remind you of the 20mph speed limit, during drop off and pick up times.

Maths - Sparx Self Study starts this week!

Students will be set tasks appropriate for their year group and ability and are expected to achieve 100% for it to be marked as complete. This does not mean they need to get every question correct the first time, but if they make a mistake they need to watch the video or reach out to their teacher before the due date and then have another go at completing every question.

If your child encounters difficulty while completing this, the Maths department clinic runs after school in Room 312 most nights of the week and there is an in school clinic available on Wednesday Lunchtime and Friday Breaktime each week in Room 901.

Students who achieve 100% by the deadline will be awarded a green eref.

Students who complete the optional ‘XP Boost’ or ‘Target’ sections of their self-study will be awarded a gold eref.

The primary parental contact will receive emails from Sparx with updates as to how your child is progressing with the tasks set each week.

All year 7 students have received an introductory lesson on Sparx outlining its features and how to get started.

Update from Hampshire Fire Service

We have received reports that there have been a number of small fires set in the locality recently. Schools across the trust have been contacted  to relay the message that this is unsafe and against the law. Fires have been set in the local parks and the area behind the Botleigh Grange Hotel.

As always we will work with the local policing team should any information be passed to us but we urge that if you witness any of this type of behaviour that you contact the local policing team as well.

We know that the large majority of the young people in the community behave beautifully and respectfully, however the minority that engage in these behaviours are putting themselves and others at risk. Please talk to your child about the dangers of playing with fire and the potential consequences.

Nut Allergies - important information

The beginning of the academic year is a good time to remind ourselves that a number of students and staff at Wildern have severe allergies to nuts. It is imperative that there is a strict avoidance of this food in order to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction and we ask that students and staff do not bring nuts into school to support our safe school environment.

Any exposure to nuts may cause a life-threatening reaction that requires emergency medical treatment. To help reduce the chance of this happening we ask that you do not send your child to school or on school trips with products containing nuts.

We appreciate your support with these procedures.

What Parents and Carers Need to Know about Sharing Photos Online

One of the more heartwarming, life-affirming aspects of social media is being able to share special moments in our children’s lives with family and friends: from the first day at school or blowing out birthday cake candles to smiling holiday selfies and cute Halloween costumes. Is there, however, such a thing as too much sharing – and can it actually put children in danger?

With potential risks such as accidentally displaying identifying details (images showing where a child lives or what school they go to, for example) and photos being seen and saved by strangers, perhaps we need to take a little more caution over what we post and where we post it. Our guide runs through some safety considerations when sharing images.
