It's been another busy week at Wildern with lots of extra curricular activities happening throughout the week for all year groups to enjoy. I'd like to introduce myself, my name is Miss Stevens Broyd and I am the Young Carers Champion here at Wildern School. I have had the pleasure of working alongside Mr Hinks for the last two years, but I am very excited to take over and transform this support group.
According to The Carers’ Trust, a Young Carer is "...someone who is under 18 who helps look after someone in their family, who is ill, disabled, has a mental health condition or misuses drugs or alcohol."
At Wildern, we support young carers by keeping open conversation about their caring circumstances, and inviting them to regular young carers interventions and drop-ins, and to events and trips that can build friendships with other young carers, broaden life skills and foster career aspirations.
Soon we will be beginning our self identification process, which will allow us to gain an understanding of who our young carers are so that we can best support them through their Wildern journey. Please contact youngcarers@wildern.org if you would like to discuss anything.
The parent handbooks have been emailed home and a link to them can also be found here.
This year Black History month is celebrating the contributions of black women in literature, music, fashion, sport, business, politics, academia, social and health care, and more to give voices to these achievements. Students will be working on a number of projects throughout October.
Year 11 Parents Evening is coming up on Thursday 12 October 2023 4pm - 8pm. This is an opportunity to talk about your child's engagement and progress with their subject teachers. Just visit insight.wildern.org to make appointments. We welcomed and many parents to our preparation for exams parents information evening for Year 10 & 11 on Thursday, thank you to those parents that came into school.
The Year 11 Extra Support Programme (ESPs) Schedule for the first part of the Autumn term 2023 can be seen here. Well done to all our Year 11 students that attended this week.
Walktober 2023 is about to begin we are encouraging all students to Get moving this Walktober! By walking, wheeling, cycling, scooting, using Park and Stride or public transport together we will reduce car use, benefit health and wellbeing, have a positive impact on the local community by reducing congestion and improve air quality.
We have set four challenges to help get moving this Walktober, plus a bonus task for the final two days. Remember, students can choose their own active travel challenges but if you would like to have a go at the suggested challenges below are some ideas to help.
Week 2 – Enjoy your active travel week: What have you enjoyed on your active journeys this week?
- For this challenge you might have:
- Enjoyed a bike ride to the park.
- Sat with a friend on the bus to school.
- Been on an autumn walk or wheel with your class.
- Had fun scooting to the local shops.
- Felt energised by getting some fresh air when walking or wheeling the last part of the journey to school.

Thank you so much to all of the parents who have very kindly supported the Technology department through paying the Technology material/ingredients contribution on parent pay. This allows us to provide the food ingredients and materials for D&T that enable us to deliver frequent practical lessons and exciting projects for our students.
If you have not already done so and you are able to contribute, we would be most grateful if you could complete this on parent pay. The option will remain on parent pay until half term. This is only applicable to parents of students in years 7/8 and also students in year 9 who are studying Design & Technology and year 9 and 10 students who are studying Food or Hospitality & Catering.

Measles cases are rising across the country, with over 102,000 children starting primary school in England being at risk of catching the disease. We are asking education settings to share key messages from the NHS about MMR / measles and how to get vaccinated. Thank you!
Measles is highly infectious and if left unvaccinated nine out of ten children in a classroom can catch the disease if just one child is infectious. Please share these resources with colleagues, parents, and where suitable, community organisations to increase awareness and encourage parents to get their children vaccinated.
If your child has missed their first or second dose of MMR vaccine, contact your GP practice to book an appointment. For more information visit the NHS Website

They’ve helped thousands of people successfully quit smoking; in laboratory tests, they’ve been found to be up to 95% less harmful than cigarettes; and they’ve been hailed as “a game changer for public health” by one independent review. So why exactly are vapes and e-cigarettes still regarded by many experts as controversial and potentially dangerous?
In terms of young people, the issue is availability. Vapes (containing nicotine) aren’t supposed to be sold to under 18s: a fact at odds with the rising number of school-age users and the products’ colourful packaging and child-friendly flavours. Our guide summarises what trusted adults need to know about the potential dangers of vaping for young people.

Rotary Shoebox Appeal 2023 - organised by the Rights Respecting Student Leaders.
We are repeating this information again this week as it is a very tight turn around thank you
Some children don’t get to enjoy Christmas in the same way, because their circumstances make it very difficult. Some will not receive any presents, unless we make this possible! Our generosity could make the world of a difference this Christmas.
As a school, we would like to fill as many shoeboxes as possible with appropriate items as gifts, which will then get sent to Moldova, Montenegro, Albania, Romania and the Ukraine. Through your child’s tutor group students can either bring in some items to help fill a shared box, or you could always complete a box (or more!) as a family and bring this into school already finished - that would be amazing!
This important video will show you more about the Rotary Shoebox Appeal and how to support your child filling and decorating the boxes properly. Please note:
£2 must be stuck on to every box to cover shipping costs
Every box must be labelled correctly (as the video explains)
Collections will happen at the D@rt on the following dates…
Tuesday 17 October - Year 7 and 9
Wednesday 18 October - Year 8 and 10
Thursday 19 October - Year 11
Thanks so much!
Mr Hinks, Mrs Burden and the RRC Focus Group

What Parents and Carers Need to Know about Trolling and online abuse
Trolling is a form of cyberaggression. It involves the sending of malicious, abusive or derogatory messages by one user (a ‘troll’) to another user online, with the intention of upsetting or harassing them, or damaging their reputation. Trolling is often anonymous and does not meet the definition of bullying, yet has the potential to develop into online bullying. Trolls will often goad others until they react. They enjoy putting people down and causing discord, starting arguments or being inflammatory – stirring things up for their own entertainment. Trolling may take the form of a one-off offensive comment, hate speech or even threats made online.
In the guide, you'll find tips on avoiding potential risks such as mental wellbeing, damaged reputation and age-inappropriate language.
