Parent Bulletin                                                                                                                            Friday 13th October 2023

Last Saturday night two Wildern students, Lizzie R and Eddie R, laid a wreath at the Menin Gate on behalf of the Wildern community to honour and remember those that lost their lives in the First World War. The wreath carried a thoughtfully penned messages from fellow student Harry P. We were immensely proud of how they represented the school.

Year 9 thoroughly enjoyed having the Solomans theatre company in school on Wednesday as part of the Education for Life programme.

On Thursday evening we had our Year 11 Parents' evening which was a huge success. Thank you to all those that attended virtually.  Next is a Year 7 meet the tutor and information evening on the 9th November 2023, more information to follow soon.

Walktober 2023 is about to begin we are encouraging all  students to Get moving this Walktober! By walking, wheeling, cycling, scooting, using Park and Stride or public transport  together we will reduce car use, benefit health and wellbeing, have a positive impact on the local community by reducing congestion and improve air quality.

We have set four challenges to help get moving this Walktober, plus a bonus task for the final two days. Remember, students can choose their own active travel challenges but if you would like to have a go at the suggested challenges below are some ideas to help.

Week 3 – Travel a mile or more: Can you travel a mile or more using active travel this week?

For this challenge you could:

  • Walk, wheel or run round the school playground at break and lunchtime.
  • Use Google maps to plot and measure a route near your home to walk, wheel, scoot or cycle after school or at the weekend.
  • Find out the distance of your bus journey.
  • Visit somewhere new by train at the weekend.
  • Park and Stride, or get dropped off, quarter of a mile from school for four mornings or more.

----------------------------------------------------

Reminder, the deadline for registering for Experience of a Workplace is the end of November. This is to ensure we have plenty of time for the Health and safety visits to be scheduled. If you have any queries or need any help please contact the Careers team careers@wildern.org

Do you do most of your riding in the mornings and evenings? Then making sure that you pick the right bike lights and setting them up correctly is really important – especially in the darker winter months.

Having the right lighting setup can make riding in dark or low-light conditions much safer and give you the peace of mind to get out there and keep racking up the miles when the sun goes down! Here are some top tips to help you achieve this.

Strut Safe is a free UK-wide phone line. If you're walking alone, our volunteers will be a friendly voice to keep you company and help you feel safe until you are through the door.

Strut Safe is proud to be the winner of the 2023 Young Scot Community Award.

What Parents and Carers Need to Know about Among Us

Created in 2018 by a small indie studio that (at the time) had only four employees, Among Us has become one of the gaming world’s biggest breakout hits of recent years. In 2020, for example, it was the world’s most-downloaded mobile game. Its simplicity helped Among Us to resonate with younger players in particular: the game’s second largest audience slice is the 13–18 age bracket.

While the 7+ age rating, emphasis on teamwork and cartoonish, colourful graphics all suit a young fan-base, however, the game does carry more serious risks than betrayal by a team-mate or an untimely on-screen demise – with in-game purchases and possible contact from strangers on our guide list of hazards that trusted adults should bear in mind.
