Walktober 2023 is about to begin we are encouraging all students to Get moving this Walktober! By walking, wheeling, cycling, scooting, using Park and Stride or public transport together we will reduce car use, benefit health and wellbeing, have a positive impact on the local community by reducing congestion and improve air quality.
We have set four challenges to help get moving this Walktober, plus a bonus task for the final two days. Remember, students can choose their own active travel challenges but if you would like to have a go at the suggested challenges below are some ideas to help.
Week 4 – Half term active fun!: Take a walk, wheel, scoot or cycle with family or friends.
For this challenge you could:
- Create a scavenger hunt for a local walk or wheel with family or friends.
- Take a picnic in a backpack and cycle with your family or friends to the park.
- Find out if there are any local pumpkin trails to do.
- Walk, wheel or scoot to visit your local library for the afternoon.
- Go for a walk or wheel to find some conkers or other autumn treasures.

The British Army celebrates 100 years of Apprenticeships (October 2023):
The first temporary Apprentice College opened in Aldershot in 1923 and was replaced by the Boys' Technical School in Chepstow in 1924. Over the following 65 years 50,000 apprentices graduated from 16 colleges, learning various trades including Vehicle Mechanic, Radar Technician, Aircraft Technician, Instrument Technician, Fitter, and Gun Fitter amongst others.
In 2004, the last Technical Foundation College in Arborfield closed when the Army offered modern Apprenticeships which are now delivered in the Initial Trade Training Schools and in the workplace. Since 2004, there have been 106,945 achievements. We now have 6,000 apprentices starts every year.

Supporting Children to Deal with Upsetting Content
They might not be able to pinpoint its location on a map, and they might not fully grasp the historical and political drivers behind the conflict – but in this age where news, images and video can cross continents in seconds, many children are now aware of the terrible recent events in Israel. It’s a situation, of course, that could cause youngsters extreme distress and worry.
Our #WakeUpWednesday guide contains some valuable pointers for supporting children to deal with upsetting content they’ve encountered online – whether that’s the attacks in Israel, ongoing worries over the environment, or something else entirely. Our tips will assist trusted adults in helping young people to process any negative emotions that they may be feeling.
