Wildern School 90th Banner Strawberry Flowers in the 90th Design of light green and red

Parent Bulletin                                                                                                                        Friday 10th November 2023

At 11 o’clock on Friday the whole school participated in our two minutes of silence for Remembrance Day. At 11 the bell rang at the end of period two and students remained silent for two minutes before heading out to break, giving them time to reflect on the sacrifice of members of the Armed forces, emergency services and acknowledge all civilians who have lost their lives in conflicts. Flowers were laid and the last post was played by one of our students.

Earlier in the week all students had a tutor session which focussed on why we celebrate Remembrance and what we do as a school as well as in the country more widely. During this students were told about the celebrations during the recent History trip to France and Belgium where every student laid a cross of remembrance and listened as a student read out the poem ‘In Flanders Field.’

Students also had the opportunity to purchase poppies from reception or during tutor times from our lovely transition leaders and had the chance to make their own paper poppy and chat about why we celebrate Remembrance Day.

A big well done to representatives for the Mindset Builders Focus Group presented alongside Stacey Miller to a variety of Professionals who work with young people at Eastleigh Youth Trends conference, they spoke about the work they have done with Stacey to develop resources to fill the gap in Mental Health provision for young people.

----------------------------------------------------

Please can we remind all students cycling to and from school to cycle with consideration of those around them and to ensure they have working lights and are visible with reflective clothing etc on the dark journeys to and from school.

----------------------------------------------------

Detention system at school.

Monday 6th November saw a change to how we are running detentions. Students who are placed into a detention after school will be notified via email to their school email address.

Parents will also be notified via email and INSIGHT see screengrab below.  This is located in top righthand corner of the INSIGHT screen. The email will detail what time and where the detention will be located. Different department areas will have their detentions on certain days of the week and year group detentions will be on a Tuesday for Years 7-10 and on Wednesdays for Year 11.

If a student misses an after school detention, they will be placed into a school detention or an SLT detention which is longer in length. This will also be communicated via email notification.

Students will be reminded by staff teaching them if they have a detention, however this reminder is not the notification of the detention, that will have been through the email sent to parents and students. Students will also have been made aware of the detention set by the teacher who has allocated the detention.

When you receive notification of a detention, please talk to your child about it and the reason for it being set. The Insight app will point you to the EREF and reason, so it is important to continue to monitor the this.

All Year groups - Tutor Sessions

This half term, all students will be looking at a variety of whole school and national events that link into the theme of Relationships.

Rights Respecting Schools - These sessions will explore our Whole School Rights Respecting Charter. All staff and students have already had the opportunity to vote on the top 5 rights of the child that we will focus on as a school community this year these are:

British Values and Diversity with a focus on life in Modern Britain

Remembrance Day - students will learn about remembrance day and what it represents. A two minute silence will also be observed on Friday 10th November.

Anti-Bullying week - During the week of 13th November, students will partake in a survey amongst other activities, including Odd Sock Day

Basics Food Bank Appeal - This a whole school community event where we ask staff and students to donate food to local families in need this Christmas.

Christmas Cards for Care homes - students will be able to create and write cards that will be sent to the local care homes.

Please see below for a brief outline of what each year group will be studying in their Education for Life lessons and Tutor sessions this half term:

Year 7:  No Outsiders -  Diversity, Prejudice & Discrimination & Bullying

In this unit, Students will explore the benefits of living in a diverse society and the importance of   celebrating differences. Students will study prejudice and discrimination by studying different types of prejudices that people hold. We will investigate the consequences  of prejudice and discrimination by exploring hate crimes in the UK. Finally, students will look into the issue of bullying and encourage a collective responsibility to ensure this does not take place within our local community and beyond.

Year 8: No Outsiders - Prejudice & Discrimination

In this unit, students will explore what it means to be part of a fair and equal society. Students will study prejudice and discrimination in relation to gender, sexuality and race.  The aim of the unit is to ensure students have an understanding of their own rights as well as encouraging them to become active global citizens who will promote fairness, equality and cohesion in society.

Year 9: Respectful Relationships

In this unit students will be exploring the concepts of marriage and divorce. Students will begin thinking about what they look for in a partner, religious views on marriage, different types of marriage ceremonies, same sex marriage, forced marriage, relationship break-down and divorce. Students will explore these concepts from different religious perspectives and have the opportunity to form their own views and opinions.

Year 10: Family Matters

In this unit students will explore and discuss issues relating to the family; parenthood; unwanted pregnancy; abortion, adoption and fostering; fertility treatments with a focus on IVF.  Students will be encouraged to form their own opinions on the ethical issues discussed whilst also considering the views of others and religious believers.  Students will also sensitively explore loss, grief and bereavement as well as topics with a focus on coercive control including domestic abuse, grooming, exploitation and gangs.

Year 11: Communication in relationships

This unit builds upon students prior learning in relationships and focuses on effective and positive communication. Students will be exploring how to foster positive and healthy relationships by examining how to handle unwanted attention, unhealthy and exploitative relationships such as stalking and sexual harassment, and the support available for this.

What Parents and Carers Need to Know about EA Sports FC

For 20 years, FIFA dominated the football video gaming arena, attracting legions of devoted fans and scooping up accolades like a digital Real Madrid. After parting ways with the sport’s governing body, however, renowned developers Electronic Arts (EA) have now launched their own individual bid for the title. It’s called EA Sports FC 24, and its effectively FIFA 2.0.

Familiar action delivered by the same team, of course, points to a comparable level of popularity – especially among those young gamers raised on the FIFA franchise. As our guide highlights, however, EA Sports FC 24 also carries many similar risks to its predecessor, including addictive gameplay, abusive voice chats and expensive in-game purchases.
