It has been a cold first full week of the term here at Wildern. Thankfully our new improved heating in blocks 3 and 5 was more than upto the job. Year 10 Parents' evening was a great success on Thursday with over 85% of parents' joining us online.
--------------------------------------------------
One of our students designed and created an Antarctic Flag that has been sent to the Polar Network in Antarctica. The flag travelled to Antarctica with Derron Fox, a zoological field assistant at Signy Research Station.
The photograph was taken on Signy Island, in the background are some Adelie and Chinstrap Penguins. Research at Signy focuses on the bird populations and terrestrial ecology. Signy Island is one of the remote South Orkney Islands, 1300km from the Falkland Islands and 600km from the Antarctic Peninsula.
--------------------------------------------------
100 staff and students attended the Mayflower Theatre on Wednesdaynight to watch the production of 'Everybody is talking about Jamie' . This performance enhanced students' knowledge on the Relationships theme of the Education for Life programme. The musical focused on the themes of identity, resilience, family, loyalty, friendship and respecting differences.
It was an absolutely phenomenal evening enjoyed by us all. As always, our students were an absolute credit to the school.

English
This term, The Woman in Black is studied as a way of introducing students to the gothic genre to all Year 8 students. (The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde - another gothic novel - is studied at GCSE). To facilitate this learning, we would kindly ask you to purchase a copy of The Woman In Black by Susan Hill so that they can annotate chapters as we read them and refer to key passages in lessons this term.
Please be assured that your son/daughter’s book does not have to be brand new and that students eligible for Pupil Premium will receive their copies through the school.
The text we would ask you to purchase is below:
The Woman In Black by Susan Hill, preferably Vintage ISBN: 978-0099288473
There are many economical ways of buying texts: World of Books sells second hand books with free postage - https://www.worldofbooks.com/en-gb, as does awesomebooks.com. Amazon.co.uk will sell new versions of the texts, but there are also second hand books available there, just look for ‘used’ under the main advertised price.

A reminder that we have our Year 10 Exams coming up in January, now 1 week away!
If you have not yet discussed your child’s latest progress check with them, now would be a perfect time to do so. This way you can support them in organising their time effectively to ensure they are revising the subjects they feel will be the most beneficial.
If helpful, please see the below links which might be of use for you to share in your conversations with your child.
Wildern Google Site Links (School email account needed)
This is a set of links to each and every school department - these outline what is taught in every subject as well as having useful revision tips and example exam resources. Links and their content will only work from an ‘@wildern.org’ login so your child will need to log in to access.
Time Management - Revision timetable guide
I have shared this before but an example timetable for revision where students can ‘make a copy’ and then edit their own version.

Update from Hampshire Fire Service
We have received reports that there have been a number of small fires set in the locality recently. Schools across the trust have been contacted to relay the message that this is unsafe and against the law. Fires have been set in the local parks and the area behind the Botleigh Grange Hotel.
As always we will work with the local policing team should any information be passed to us but we urge that if you witness any of this type of behaviour that you contact the local policing team as well.
We know that the large majority of the young people in the community behave beautifully and respectfully, however the minority that engage in these behaviours are putting themselves and others at risk. Please talk to your child about the dangers of playing with fire and the potential consequences.

One of the ways to support sustainable living is to consider how far food travels to get to our plate. Many suggest that we should consider different protein sources and consume a variety of protein across a week in order to support sustainability and our carbon footprint.
Another way is to consider how far some of our food is traveling to get to us. As an island, we know that in the UK we cannot feed ourselves and rely on imports for many products. However, it is worth bearing where products come when we are purchasing food if we are considering reducing our carbon footprint.

Top Tips for Managing Screen Time
From using them for communication, work, shopping and entertainment, devices such as smartphones, laptops and the rest are now deeply ingrained into modern society. Small wonder, then, that young people – who’ve grown up surrounded by such gadgets – can sometimes struggle to put them down, switch them off or keep themselves occupied without them.
While limiting our screen time may require a great deal of restraint, the effort can be rewarded with significant benefits to our physical and mental health. Our guide has simple tips for helping to manage the amount of screen time in your household – encouraging the whole family to spend more quality time together and live in the moment.
