On Friday 8th March, we said goodbye to the chicks. We have been very impressed with how respectful and careful all students have been when handling and caring for the them. Thank you to the Year 10 and 11 Animal care students for their hard work cleaning and feeding the chicks. We hope the students have had as much joy out of having them as the staff have!

Celebrating World Book Day 2024: A Recap and Thank You

We are pleased to share with you a recap of our recent celebration of World Book Day 2024, which took place on Thursday 7th March. It was indeed a remarkable day filled with enthusiasm, engagement, and meaningful contributions from our community.

World Book Day serves as a reminder of the profound significance of literature in our lives. It encourages us to celebrate the power of storytelling, embrace the joy of reading, and recognise the invaluable role that books play in shaping our understanding of the world.

We would also like to express appreciation to those who generously contributed to our fundraising efforts for both our Learning Resource Centre (LRC) and the Wessex Cancer Trust. Your donations will go a long way in supporting these important causes and making a positive impact in our community.

  --------------------------------------------------

Huge thanks to Solomons Theatre who performed their play 'Power of Love' to all of our Year 10 students yesterday. The play explored exploitation and the forms of abuse, healthy relationships (the significance of respect, equality, trust and goodwill) and grooming. The play compliments the statutory RSE guidance and links in with the Relationship units that Year 10 have been completing in their Education for Life lessons ‘Family Matters and Exploring Influence’ . The play and workshop gave students the opportunity to learn more about the law surrounding these issues.

  --------------------------------------------------

Year 11 Maths and English Practice Exams 3 results will be available to collect from the DART at 8am on Monday 11th March.  This will be followed by a special assembly where students will be able to compare results from the November practice exams and reflect on their progress.

  --------------------------------------------------

On Monday, a group of Year 10 students spent the day exploring part of St John's College Oxford University and the nearby Natural History Museum. The highlight of the day was having lunch in the University Hall and meeting some creepy crawlies at the museum!

--------------------------------------------------

Year 10 GCSE PE Trip to the University of Bath. Forty-five students visited the University of Bath on Thursday to experience a taste of life as a Sport Science student.  Students started off the day taking part in practical sessions focused around field testing and speed, agility and quickness skills. After lunch students had a lecture delivered to them in a 300-seater theatre on the topic of Nutrition, followed by a tour of the University Campus and Sports Training Village. It gave students a much better understanding of University life and what it means to be a Sport Scientist.

Nut Allergies - important information

The beginning of the academic year is a good time to remind ourselves that a number of students and staff at Wildern have severe allergies to nuts. It is imperative that there is a strict avoidance of this food in order to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction and we ask that students and staff do not bring nuts into school to support our safe school environment.

Any exposure to nuts may cause a life-threatening reaction that requires emergency medical treatment. To help reduce the chance of this happening we ask that you do not send your child to school or on school trips with products containing nuts.

We appreciate your support with these procedures.

Please contact the first aid room if there are any changes to your child's health/medication so we are up to date.

For further advice or for information on the support both in and outside of school please visit our Wellbeing Hub

The Hampshire School Games Year 8 Girls Football Finals took place all day today at Stoneham Football Complex.

In the morning group stage, Wildern put out some energetic gutsy performances to come top of their group. The afternoon group stage saw us compete in the 'Superleague 1' group, and despite some great performances, with goals scored and some great saves by Grace in goal, we missed out on a place in the Knockout Finals by 1 point. The girls worked incredibly well as a team and fought hard in all 12 matches played throughout the course of the day.

Well done to all players involved.: Grace S, Ellie A, Leona C, Paige Y, Paige M, Imogen S, Chloe F, Maisie S, Harriet L and Freya C

SETA Apprenticeship Vacancies Bulletin - A message from SETA

Things are starting to ramp up a notch with our employers.  As such please find attached the latest Engineering Apprenticeship Vacancy Bulletin.

I would also like to draw your attention to the Recruitment Clinics (pg 2).  The first one of which is taking place on Tuesday 5th March during National Careers Week.  As well as being able to chat to SETA staff about ‘all things apprenticeship’ during a dedicated 1-2-1 IAG session, they will also have the opportunity to chat to a couple of employers who have live vacancies at the moment.  The employers are looking to recruit young people to start in September 2024.  Booking is advisable for these sessions on our website.

There are more vacancies due to go live over the next few months, all in readiness for September.  So please make sure that you keep an eye on the apprenticeship vacancies page on our website, and signpost interested students there too!

What Parents and Carers Need to Know about Online Dating & Relationships

Online dating has seen a sharp rise in popularity over the last few years – especially in 2020, when the boat was well and truly rocked for all of us. Apps like MyLOL and Wink have drawn a huge userbase of young people – and it’s not hard to see why. With their sleek design and ease of use, the promise of finding love with but a swipe of your finger is an appealing one indeed.

It is not, however, all sunshine and rainbows. While these apps have helped bring together many couples who may never have met otherwise, lax security measures and bad actors can turn these apps into a hotbed of #OnlineSafety risks. Our guide investigates these risks and makes sure you’re equipped to keep your child safe in the world of online dating.
