Thanks so much for contributing to the Southampton City Mission Easter Egg Appeal 2024! We had such high eggs-pectations, and it turned out to be an eggs-elent week!
Throughout last week it has been lovely to see so many students making their way into the D@rt with Easter eggs in hand and big smiles on their faces too (and the smell of chocolate near AUD1 was almost too much to resist!
Our overall total this year then was 410 eggs. Overall winning house goes to Driscoll and Jubilee and the overall winning year group was Year 8

Year 9 and Year 10 Education for Life students had an amazing night out in London last Thursday watching 'Mrs Doubtfire' the musical . As ever our students displayed impeccable behaviour and they thoroughly valued this opportunity to enhance their learning on relationships and the family.
--------------------------------------------------
Some of our Year 9 and 10 Food, DT & Hospitality students have just returned from an incredible weekend in Barcelona. From indulging in Spanish cuisine to immersing themselves in the beauty of Gaudi’s architecture, and even mastering the metro system, they truly embraced every moment of their cultural adventure! We’re proud of not only their enthusiasm for learning about a new culture but also by their exemplary behaviour throughout the trip!

It was wonderful to welcome so many parents and guardians onto the school site on Thursday evening for our pilot Year 11 Parents' Evening. Thank you to everyone that attended.

Toilets
Thank you for your support following our email to parents on Monday about an incident in the toilets. We have taken further action this week to ensure that those who need to use the toilet facilities as they are intended for are able to do so. At this time we are monitoring the use of the toilets during lesson time as well as break/lunch time to ensure that students are not hanging out in these and creating an unsavoury atmosphere.
To maximise learning time, we like students to use the toilets during break and lunchtime to avoid time out of lessons. Staff supervise all toilets at these times and ensure students are only using the toilets as they are intended and that students do not hang around there longer than needed. This keeps queues moving so that all students can access these facilities. This has been working well and all toilets have found any queues there are move quickly.
Students should use their allocated toilet block during break times and if this is closed due to maintenance/repairs they use the toilet block identified on the poster on the door. Toilets are closed at the end of break to support everyone getting to their lessons on time.
During lesson time, if a student needs to use the toilet we ask that they seek permission from their teacher by going to their lesson and being given an orange pass. The Block 5 toilets are opened within the first 10 minutes of the start of a lesson and closed around 5-10 minutes before the end.
We hope this reassures you that your child always has access to these facilities throughout the day.

The last day of this term, Thursday 28th March, is a non-school uniform. We are raising money for Sport Relief which aims to harness the power of sport to change lives. If your child wants to take part then there is a £1-2 donation amount required. However, if you did wish to support this amazing charity further, and wanted to give above the £2 suggested donation, then that would be so gratefully received.
|
|
We want to be a community who change the lives of others in need and make opportunities for that, wherever possible. We’re aiming for £2000 this time. If every student brought £1 then we’d reach it. If half gave £2, we’d reach it. Easily do-able!
Giving will be mostly online, but cash is still welcome. Here’s to making a difference!

What is Neurodiversity Celebration Week About?
Neurodiversity Celebration Week is about celebrating the strengths and talents of people with learning differences. Sadly, these students can often be misunderstood. Neurodiversity Celebration Week is one way of reminding everyone of the importance of being kind, tolerant and accepting of everyone.
Why Does Neurodiversity Matter?
The concept of neurodiversity is the acceptance that all humans are different, with unique minds, needs and abilities. This approach moves beyond labels such as autism, dyslexia or ADHD and recognises that differences in ability are natural in the human genome and can contain unique gifts and contributions. The human brain has a wide spectrum of functions and any differences should be acknowledged as just another way of being or doing things.
Recognising and Celebrating Strengths and Talents
Neurodiversity Celebration Week serves as a reminder that no matter what our differences and challenges, everyone also has their own strengths and talents. Many people who have ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia or Tourette Syndrome and struggled in school, are now very successful. Many attribute their success to their unique way of thinking and perceiving the world around them.
What Can You Do To Help?
Talk to your child about Neurodiversity. Ask your child to not tease or make fun of anyone in their class who is different or who is finding something difficult. Instead, encourage them to be kind, understanding and encouraging. Remind your child that they have the power to make a positive difference to someone who may be having a difficult time. Encourage your child to make someone’s day by being understanding and kind.

10 Top Tips for Parents and Educators: Encouraging Open Conversations at Home
Cultural and technological changes have made the experiences of today’s children vastly different to our own childhoods; it can be challenging to engage youngsters in open, honest conversation – especially about more sensitive topics. This, combined with many children’s instinct to avoid “rocking the boat”, can make it difficult to stay up to date with the goings on in their lives.
However, it’s hugely important that trusted adults still offer an empathetic ear and feel able to encourage young people to open up about their day-to-day activities. This guide provides ten top tips for promoting open conversations with children – helping to make sure there’s someone they know they can turn to in times of need.
