Hello, and welcome to this week's edition of the Wildern Weekly. My name is Mrs Warner and I am the Assistant Headteacher. My role in school is KS4 assistant head linked to the curriculum, Pupil Premium lead and timetabling with Miss Smith and Mrs Cowan. I also line manage Careers and our careers programme.
This week has been an emotional week for us all as we have been celebrating the five years that our Year 11s have had with us and looking back on their time and their many achievements both individually, within teams and as a whole year group. They had their Leavers' Assembly on Tuesday which was full of photographs and memories and showcased some of our fantastic performers and looked to the future rising stars among us. The sun shone brightly down on us all for shirt signing which was full of messages of friendship and wishes for good luck. They began their seminar timetable on Thursday 9th May as exam season has now fully started.
--------------------------------------------------
Congratulations to the Year 10 football team on their fantastic Hampshire Cup victory! After a tough game in hot conditions the match ended in a 2-2 draw, with Wildern winning on penalties. This completes a brilliant league and cup double for the boys in Year 10 in their U15 season - well done, it was a brilliant event at the Silverlake Stadium! Thank you to all that came to support also.

On wednesday afternoon we emailed you in regards to a report of indecent exposure at Turnpike Way Recreation Ground. We have also now received reports of an adult male taking photographs of students as they walked home.
The Police have contacted us today to ask that Parents call 999 and not 101 if they see anything suspicious. Thank you to those of you who shared information with us. If you have any further information, please do let us know. Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Further to our previous messages about litter and rubbish it has continued to be discarded at the Wildern Lane end of the local nature reserve. The worst spot is next to the metal gate just along the Stoney path. There are a lot of “Radnor” brand plastic mineral water and flavoured water bottles which are only sold in the school canteen.
Please would you pass this on to your child and remind them about respecting our local community and these nature reserve areas.

Local History Month
If you are interested in researching your family history the best place to start is with your immediate family and then work backwards. Talk to your living relatives about their parents, grandparents and other relatives.
You may also be able to find documents and certificates that are already in the family for example birth, marriage and death certificates will help you get started. Family bibles, photographs, memorabilia are also good sources of information.
Remember to take notes and keep clear records.
Once you have the beginning of the picture we recommend you coming to see us at Southampton archives where you will be able to get more information on your family in Southampton.
You may be interested in looking at the types of records listed:
- Records of Births, Marriages and Deaths: Records of births, deaths and marriages registers and issues certified copy certificates for all these events occurring within the city from 1st July 1837 to the present day.
- Civil records: Since 1837 registration has been the responsibility of central government. Records can be found either at the National Archives or, if the event took place at Southampton, at the Registrars office in Bugle Street.
- Church records: Between 1538 and 1837 registration was the responsibility of local churches. Each church kept register books listing all the births deaths and marriages that took place in that parish. The registers for Southampton are held in the Southampton Archive. The Central Library has indexed transcripts for volumes before 1837 and microfiche copies for later years. You may find the document Index to Church of England Parish registers useful for finding records in Southampton.
- International Genealogical Index (IGI): The IGI is a name index to christenings and marriages in church records. The Central Library has a microfiche copy of the index.
- Census Returns: Population censuses have been taken at ten yearly intervals since 1841. The Central Library holds all the census returns for the Southampton area. Street and name indexes are available for most years. Census records for other parts of the UK for the years 1841-1901 are available via Ancestry for libraries, which is free to use on library computers, or you can use the public Ancestry site at home or on your phone. The 1911 and newly released 1921 UK Census records are available through Find My Past, another service accessible for free on library computers.
- Street Directories: contain alphabetical and street by street lists of householders. The Central Library has an almost complete run of Southampton Street directories from c1840. some are also available on Plimsoll

Reasons You Should Always Wear Sunscreen
Most of us know the importance of wearing sunscreen in the summer months to avoid sunburn and damage, but it really should be a year-round preventive health measure. Always wear sunscreen, no matter your skin color or tone. Sunscreen dates back to ancient Egypt, where rice bran extract and jasmine were used to help shield skin from the sun. Chemists invented the first commercial sunscreen in 1936, and it has been improved upon ever since. Modern sunscreens are water resistant, and are included in many cosmetics and beauty products, such as primers, foundations, serums, and creams.

Main A/B vegetarian options are always available - just ask Dan and his team. * correct at time of sending, but may be subject to change
The cost of some of our products are going up after Easter due to an increased cost for fresh ingredients we purchase to cook and bake.

Over 3 days last week Year 10 participated in practice Interviews. The event was a resounding success. Volunteers from all industries served as interviewers, they were genuinely impressed by the student’s enthusiasm and preparation, offering positive feedback on their communication skills and professionalism. The energy was palpable, with a distinct buzz of excitement among the students as they left their interviews. This experience has not only boosted their confidence but also equipped them with valuable insights into the dynamics of interviews.
