Hello, and welcome to this week's edition of the Wildern Weekly.
It is May half term already! I don't know what has happened to this year, it is flying by and on our return we will be in June! As you know, OFSTED have published their school report following our inspection in April. We are delighted that they agree with our view that Wildern School is a wonderful place to learn. I hope that you recognise your children’s education in their words:
- Pupils are prepared well for life beyond school.
- They achieve well across a range of academic and vocational subjects.
- The school’s ‘education for life’ programme gives pupils a firm understanding of tolerance and respect. Pupils are proud of how they have shaped this.
- The school sets high expectations for pupils’ academic learning. This is mirrored by an emphasis on developing character and resilience.
- The school provides a broad range of experiences to enhance pupils’ learning.
- Pupils with lower reading ages receive focused additional teaching. As a result, they build fluency rapidly, and can access the full curriculum. This approach complements a school-wide literacy strategy for boosting reading for pleasure.
- Pupils are taught about vital issues such as positive relationships and healthy lifestyles.
- Careers guidance is extensive, and is tailored to pupils’ aspirations.
I love this time of year at Wildern as we hopefully start the long hot summer to make up for the dismal wet winter we have had. This summer term holds particular significance as it marks the build-up to the Paris Olympic Games as well as the European Championships (Euros) 2024. The Olympic Games serve as a global celebration of athletic prowess, unity, and human achievement. Athletes from around the world will converge in Paris to compete at the highest level, showcasing their talent and dedication to their respective sports whilst the Euros brings together the football nations of Europe alongside their dedicated fans all hopeful for the chance of winning the top prize.
Participating in activities leading up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games or the Euros can foster a sense of excitement and anticipation. Whether through our extra-curricular programme, local sports clubs, recreational events, or Olympic-themed/football themed activities, we all can immerse ourselves in the spirit of the games. What a privilege and a joy!

Our wonderful Anti Bullying Ambassadors worked alongside Anti Bullying Ambassadors from Deer Park to create this Student Anti-Bullying Policy. They should all very very proud of how hard they work and their dedication to stamping and raising awareness of bullying behaviour.

IMPORTANT Message Traffic and parking
We have noticed a significant increase in the traffic and parking in the roads and bus stops surrounding the school, particularly at the beginning end of the school day.
May we ask that you are respectful to our neighbours when parking to ensure they are able to enter and leave their properties at all times. The safety of our students is paramount, so please do not park on double yellow lines, particularly at the top of Allen Road and Westward Road, or stop on the zig zag markings. May we also remind you of the 20mph speed limit on Wildern Lane at all times. Please consider using the Park & Stride locations.

Thursday 6 June 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
This year, the UK commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings on 6 June 1944 with a series of major commemorations and events across the UK and in France. Also known as D-Day, the historic operation (Operation Overlord) saw the Allied Forces mount a large-scale invasion of Nazi-occupied France that ultimately tipped the course of the Second World War in the Allies’ favour.
Southampton played a central role in preparations for the D-Day landings, with millions of British and American troops based around Southampton Water.
You can find out more about Southampton's role in D-Day on the Southampton Stories website which features content from Southampton Museums Archive.
Click here to find out the special events and activities taking place in the city to commemorate D-Day 80.
A Newsround special: a 30-minute D-Day special available on BBC iPlayer from 3 June, suitable for children aged seven and older. Two children, William and Lyra, explore their family connection to D-Day, and travel to Normandy with two veterans, Mervyn and Arthur. Through spending time with them, and hearing their stories, William and Lyra realise the sacrifices made by the wartime generation in order to liberate Europe.
D-Day: The Last Heroes: In these three short films, aimed at secondary school pupils, historian Dan Snow examines how two years of meticulous planning shaped D-Day. He recounts the events at Sword Beach and Omaha, using the memories of those who were there, and hears extraordinary stories of heroism, self-sacrifice, and determination from those who took part.

Guidance for Absence and Lateness
There is a strong correlation between high attendance and high achievement as well as emotional health and positive relationships, and so we should all be working together to give children the best possible start in life. Research shows that absence from school, for whatever reason, can disadvantage a child by creating gaps in learning, which affect a child’s ability to succeed.

Hampshire County Council have joined forces with the RNLI and the University of Portsmouth to get key water safety messages out to all secondary schools.
As Hampshire has about 230 miles of coastline, as well as many rivers, canals and lakes, it’s essential that young people know about water safety.
Every year, 300-400 people lose their lives by accidental drowning. It’s the third most common cause of death amongst children and young people. Two of the most common causes are cold water shock and rip currents. Hampshire have created a short information film identifying what to do in these situations that they hope will inform parents and young people. Please take the time to watch the film.
The key messages are below:
Cold water shock:
- Remember to float
- The cold water will catch your breathe
- Don’t panic - keep calm
- Try and relax
- Shout for help
Rip currents (when the water pulls at your ankles):
- Swim between lifeguard flags (if there are any)
- Swim parallel to the shore
- Shout for help
We know that these messages may not be new for some of you but we wanted to ensure that before the summer holidays these are revisited to ensure that everyone in our community knows how to keep safe.

The cost of some of our products are going up after Easter due to an increased cost for fresh ingredients we purchase to cook and bake.

What Parents and Carers Need to Know about Discord
Discord is a free app which allows users to communicate in real time via text, video or voice chat. Available on desktop and mobile devices, it was originally designed to help gamers cooperate – but has evolved into a more general networking platform for a range of online communities, discussing topics like TV series, music, Web3 and more. Discord is organised around closed groups, referred to as ‘servers’. To join a server, users must be invited or provided with a unique link. It’s a space for users to interact with friends, meet others with shared interests and collaborate in private online — but it’s also a place where young people can be exposed to risks if the right precautions aren’t taken.
In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as cyberbullying, predators and inappropriate content.
