Hello, and welcome to this week's Wildern Weekly. My name is Mrs Cowan, and I am one of the Deputy Headteachers. My main area of responsibility is leading the Curriculum aspects of life at school. This includes working with all the fantastic Directors of Learning (DOLs) their assistants (ADOLs) and Subject Leaders (SLs) to shape the schemes of learning your child studies and that students are enjoying their lessons. I work closely with the English, Maths and Science leaders and one of the best parts of my job is seeing student learning in action.
Visiting lessons, meeting students and listening to their experiences of what they are learning about is a real privilege. Whether it be seeing students dissecting a heart in science, debating the causes and impacts of an event in History, measuring the current weather conditions around the school site in geography, creating work in the style of O'Keefe in art or discussing a writer's choice of language in a short story in English, no two days are the same! Each subject team strives to keep their curriculum alive and topical, teaching with passion which engages students in their learning and equips them with the knowledge and skills to support them in their future.
We really do believe that every moment counts, not only so all our students leave with fantastic results, but also having had great co-curricular opportunities too. Whether it be as part of a sporting team, going on a trip, enjoying a club or performing in the school show, it's a pleasure to watch students grow and develop their skills such as team work, dedication, resilience and creativity. Today is the deadline for all who want to participate in our Paultons Park trip this year - please check that you have done this as we don't want anyone to be dissapointed!
If there is ever anything that you feel you need support with regarding your child's learning, then please speak to your child’s tutor or their class teacher - we are here to help
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We had to use the school lockdown procedures this week as we had two ambulances on site for 2 separate incidents during breaktime on Thursday.
Our students responded well to the procedure as always and we are very proud of them. If your child shares any worries or concerns over this with you that they may not have shared in school, please let their tutor know so we can reassure them .
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was wonderful to see so many Year 9 Parents on Thursday for our Face to Face Parents' Evening in the rain. Thank you for coming onto site to meet with us.

Restorative and Reflective Room (R and R Room)
As you know, as a school we are striving to improve behaviour and attitudes within our Wildern School community. You will have seen in our most recent Ofsted report that we have made significant improvements in this area but there is still a small minority of students that are not meeting our expectations and disrupting the teaching and learning of others. We know you will be in agreement that this is simply not acceptable.
When a student is persistently disrupting a lesson we currently use a system called ‘safehouse’ where the student is moved to another lesson with a different year group. Over time we have found this system to be less effective than we would like and we are therefore moving to a new system called the Restorative and Reflective Room (R and R Room).
The rationale for the R and R Room is:
- To reduce disruption to learning by providing a formal space for students to go to when behaviour is unacceptable.
- To ensure students do not continue to disrupt the teaching and learning of others.
- To put clear expectations in place for all students; there are consequences for behaviour that does not meet our Wildern School community expectations.
From Monday 10th June the Restorative and Reflective Room will open and we will no longer use a ‘safehouse’ system. For the small minority of students who disrupt a lesson, the information below details how this system will work.

Guidance for Absence and Lateness
There is a strong correlation between high attendance and high achievement as well as emotional health and positive relationships, and so we should all be working together to give children the best possible start in life. Research shows that absence from school, for whatever reason, can disadvantage a child by creating gaps in learning, which affect a child’s ability to succeed.

Health and Wellbeing Letter
As we navigate our way through the final term, the well-being of our students remains our top priority. Given the recent rise in circulating illnesses, we are taking proactive measures to ensure the health and safety of all our students. As part of this effort, we kindly ask for your assistance in identifying any students who may have a weakened immune system or underlying health conditions that could put them at higher risk.

At Wildern we see the huge benefits to children of being able to read fluently and confidently and believe the Sparx Reader programme supports this. After using the programme for a year and finding very good engagement with the self study from students, we wanted to gain a sense of parental opinion. We’d very much appreciate you taking the time to complete this short questionnaire about Sparx Reader (not SparxMaths):

Healthy Eating Week
This Week is Healthy Eating Week, the perfect opportunity to try healthy eating. What we eat has a huge impact on how we look and feel. The right foods can boost your metabolism and improve your overall health and nutrition.
Did you know that teenagers aged 11-18 years have less than 3 portions of their 5 A DAY?
Different coloured fruit and vegetables contain their own combination of nutrients. Eating a variety of different coloured fruit and vegetables as part of meals and snacks can provide teenagers with a range of important nutrients. Remember it is at least 5 A DAY – more is better!
We should have about 6-8 glasses or cups of fluid each day, and more if the weather is hot, we are exercising or being active!
Water is a great choice as a main drink because it keeps you hydrated without adding calories to the diet, or sugars that can potentially damage teeth. Other healthier choices include unsweetened tea, coffee or herbal infusions, and lower fat milk. Unsweetened 100% fruit or vegetable juices and smoothies can provide vitamins and minerals but should be kept to a maximum of one small glass (150ml) per day.

Measles cases are rising across the country, with over 102,000 children starting primary school in England being at risk of catching the disease. We are asking education settings to share key messages from the NHS about MMR / measles and how to get vaccinated. Thank you!
Measles is highly infectious and if left unvaccinated nine out of ten children in a classroom can catch the disease if just one child is infectious. Please share these resources with colleagues, parents, and where suitable, community organisations to increase awareness and encourage parents to get their children vaccinated.
If your child has missed their first or second dose of MMR vaccine, contact your GP practice to book an appointment. For more information visit the NHS Website

IMPORTANT Message Traffic and parking
We have noticed a significant increase in the traffic and parking in the roads and bus stops surrounding the school, particularly at the beginning end of the school day.
May we ask that you are respectful to our neighbours when parking to ensure they are able to enter and leave their properties at all times. The safety of our students is paramount, so please do not park on double yellow lines, particularly at the top of Allen Road and Westward Road, or stop on the zig zag markings. May we also remind you of the 20mph speed limit on Wildern Lane at all times. Please consider using the Park & Stride locations.
Use this form to report details of a parking contravention that you believe requires further investigation. Be aware that this is not a request service, and not all reports will be followed up with a visit; however each report will be looked at and a decision will be made taking into account the resources available.

Releasing in January 2024, Palworld took the gaming scene by storm, selling over five million copies in just three days. A new take on the survival genre – blending mechanics similar to games like Minecraft with the ability to catch and fight alongside creatures reminiscent of Pokémon – it saw plenty of coverage from games journalists and influencers alike.
However, despite its lower age rating and popularity with young gamers, Palworld has been criticised for its reliance on shock humour – touching on topics including animal abuse and sweatshop labour – and as a game featuring online multiplayer, one can expect certain safety concerns to arise. Our guide dives into the risks of Palworld, offering expert tips on how to safeguard children who simply want to enjoy the game.
