Hello, and welcome to this week's edition of the Wildern Weekly!
My name is Mrs Thomas and I am part of the Senior Leadership Team here at Wildern School, where my role as Assistant Head, Attendance and Inclusion enables me to oversee the Pastoral Team at Wildern alongside Mr M Chance, Deputy Head and Miss H Jones, Assistant Headteacher.
I am passionate about supporting our amazing students through the challenges that they may face through their time at secondary school and I am constantly seeking new ways to do this.
Alongside our Anti Bullying Ambassadors and Diversity Focus Group I work hard to raise awareness and stamp out bullying behaviours in school. Through these focus groups we hope to equip our students and staff with the tools they need to tackle bullying behaviour to create a safer, kinder school community. Empowering students to make a change and be involved in these big issues is important to me and helping students to create a positive culture in the school is essential moving forward and for them to have a sense of belonging.
This week we have held our first Cultural Day which we look to build upon annually. The whole day was led by our Diversity Focus Group. We wanted to give all students the opportunity to understand and celebrate their own identities and see how they shape our amazing collective Wildern identity, ensuring that all students know that they have a right to belong within our school community.
By focusing on the heritage and the diversity of our school it allowed our students to also focus on our ‘Respect’ attribute and the British values of tolerance. The day centred on the importance of respecting and accepting everybody for who they are, whatever their differences, and responding to these differences with interest and curiosity.
During the day we invited our staff and students to come into school in clothing which represents their family heritage, traditions or culture for the day, this could include traditional/cultural dress, dress in the colours of flags which represent heritage, Wildern House Colours, or uniforms, such as cadets, scouts or similar.
There were opportunities throughout the day in some lessons to teach/share/celebrate some of our different cultures and traditions along with some fantastic breaktime events which included food tasting with food from different cultures, chalk mandalas, Julien Opie portraits, students being invited to write their hopes and dreams on paper white doves to support the 150th anniversary of St Johns Church celebrations and World Dance tutorials.
We very much look forward to sharing further photos of our Culture Day with you in due course.

Guidance for Absence and Lateness
There is a strong correlation between high attendance and high achievement as well as emotional health and positive relationships, and so we should all be working together to give children the best possible start in life. Research shows that absence from school, for whatever reason, can disadvantage a child by creating gaps in learning, which affect a child’s ability to succeed.

Health and Wellbeing Letter
As we navigate our way through the final term, the well-being of our students remains our top priority. Given the recent rise in circulating illnesses, we are taking proactive measures to ensure the health and safety of all our students. As part of this effort, we kindly ask for your assistance in identifying any students who may have a weakened immune system or underlying health conditions that could put them at higher risk.

At Wildern we see the huge benefits to children of being able to read fluently and confidently and believe the Sparx Reader programme supports this. After using the programme for a year and finding very good engagement with the self study from students, we wanted to gain a sense of parental opinion. We’d very much appreciate you taking the time to complete this short questionnaire about Sparx Reader (not SparxMaths):

Experience of a workplace
As part of our Year 10 careers programme, all students had the opportunity to attend an experience of a workplace visit for two consecutive days this week.
Experience of a workplace gives students the chance to learn about what type of job they might enjoy and develop their CV. We know it can be one of the most transformational experiences young people have during their education.
Feedback this week has been amazing and our students have been a credit to their families and the school.
Well Done Year 10.

Defibrillator (AED)
Many of us are intimidated by the thought of using a defibrillator (AED). But we shouldn’t be. They can be found in many public areas and are designed to be easy to use. You could be called on to use one at any time or place.
So, take a moment to find out how they work – you could save someone’s life!

The cost of some of our products are going up after Easter due to an increased cost for fresh ingredients we purchase to cook and bake.
