Hello, and welcome to this week's edition of the Wildern Weekly!

It has been a busy and hot week here as we come to the end of June.  On Tuesday we celebrated with over 150 Creative Arts and PE students who had achieved their full or half colours.  Students applied for their colours for their commitment to PE or the Creative Arts over 2 years for their half colours or 4 for their full colours.   Students and staff were served a delicious meal by Chef Dan and his team before being presented with their colours badge or tie. Every year we have more and more students apply and receive their colours and we are so proud of all they achieve.  We are looking forward to seeing even more students be awarded these next year.

The temperature pushed over 28c on our weather station so on Wednesday our students were given the option to wear PE kit to school.

Then on Thursday we welcomed 300 students who will be our new Year 7 in September we had an amazing day with them.

Next week on the other end of the journey our Year 11 have their Hoodie, Yearbook and Prom Ticket collection happening between 3pm and 4pm  on Thursday 4th July., followed by their Prom at St Mary's on Friday 5th July.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was been reported to us that on Monday evening between 20.30 and 20.50 two of our students encountered an adult male who exposed himself to them at Greta Park, Hedge End.

The Police have shared the following description: White male, 50 - 60 years old and Bald or receding hair

We appreciate that this description is not incredibly detailed however anyone acting suspiciously with these characteristics should be reported to the Police. Neighbourhood Officers will be out today in the area for reassurance patrols. We will continue to work with the Police to support any further enquiries. Please ask your children to be vigilant on the way to and from school and to report anything suspicious to us here at school.

If you have any further information, please report this directly to the Police using 101 or 999. Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Summer Term Parent Survey

Please click the button to be taken to our short Summer survey which is focusing on Communication and Developing Students into Global Citizens. This time there are 14 quick questions which can be answered in as little as a couple of minutes, but there is also the opportunity to expand on your answers if you would like us to know more. We are asking all parents to complete this as soon as possible.

We are always interested in hearing from everyone in our community about the things we are doing well and the things we perhaps need to improve. As part of our quality assurance processes we regularly speak to students in school about their experience but we also want to hear from Parents.

The survey will be open until 12pm Wednesday 3rd July and the results of this will be shared with parents at the end of the month.

Guidance for Absence and Lateness

There is a strong correlation between high attendance and high achievement as well as emotional health and positive relationships, and so we should all be working together to give children the best possible start in life. Research shows that absence from school, for whatever reason, can disadvantage a child by creating gaps in learning, which affect a child’s ability to succeed.

Health and Wellbeing Letter

As we navigate our way through the final term, the well-being of our students remains our top priority. Given the recent rise in circulating illnesses, we are taking proactive measures to ensure the health and safety of all our students. As part of this effort, we kindly ask for your assistance in identifying any students who may have a weakened immune system or underlying health conditions that could put them at higher risk.

English

At Wildern we see the huge benefits to children of being able to read fluently and confidently and believe the Sparx Reader programme supports this. After using the programme for a year and finding very good engagement with the self study from students, we wanted to gain a sense of parental opinion. We’d very much appreciate you taking the time to complete this short questionnaire about Sparx Reader (not SparxMaths):

Experience of a workplace

From the 17th to the 19th June our year 10 students embarked on a journey beyond the classroom into the world of work. Over the three days, 210 students spread across various sectors, experiencing first-hand what the world of work entails.

Some of the sectors included

  • Healthcare
  • Technology
  • Education
  • Finance and Business
  • Creative Arts
  • Engineering and Construction

The feedback from employers was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the enthusiasm, professionalism, and adaptability of our students. Here are some of the standout quotes:

Student was very communicative with everyone in the business and was a pleasure to be around.

Student displayed a growth in confidence as the days went by asking key questions and demonstrating a clear high level understanding

Student showed personal integrity and enthusiasm for everything she did during her two days.

I was impressed with how independent the student was, he confidently got on with every task I gave him and did it really well.

Student was tasked with writing her own script. Although this project is assigned for a week-long placement, she was able to complete an entire script in a short afternoon session. This is incredibly impressive, and we will use her written content as inspiration for future scripts that we write and present.

Student was Polite, courteous, good rapport with staff and pupils

Student was very polite and engaging

Very polite young man, he came in enthusiastic about learning what was involved in car repairs. He asked lots of excellent questions and his knowledge and ways of thinking was very impressive. We would be happy to have the student back for any future experience and he will be a credit to the motor trade should he continue to pursue this.

Polite, courteous and quick to learn which makes him very employable.

What an absolute pleasure it was having the Wildern students for their work experience.  They were professional, hard-working, respectful, and absolutely did Wildern proud.  The staff gave them glowing reports.

This work experience program has been a significant milestone for your Year 10 students. Not only did it allow them to explore potential career paths, but also helped develop essential skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving and time management.

We are incredibly proud of our students and grateful to all the employers who opened their doors and offered such enriching experiences.

As we look forward to next years’ experience of a workplace program, we are excited to see how these young individuals will continue to grow and contribute to their Chose fields. This year’s successful placements have set a high standard for the years to come.

As our current year 9 students prepare to transition into year 10, the upcoming summer presents an excellent opportunity to begin searching for potential employers for an experience of a workplace placement. After the summer break, we will be hosting a Parent Information Evening on 17th September for all parents to walk through the entire work experience process.

Given that the deadline for securing placements is November, utilising the summer to explore and connect with employers is crucial. This period is deal for researching industries of interest, reaching out to businesses and securing a meaningful experience of workplace.

Did you know?

A student with Diabetes has more than 180 decisions to make than a typical student.

Blue paper towels and hand sanitiser contain sugar, so a reading could be inaccurate should the student use these before testing their levels.

10 Top Tips for Parents and Educators: Promoting Physical Wellbeing

Football’s European Championship is now well underway, and this huge event could potentially get children interested in having a go on the pitch themselves – or perhaps they’re already passionate about sport. It could present a great opportunity to get young people engaged in physical activity and regular exercise, which has proven positive impacts on all facets of their health – including mental and emotional wellbeing.

With all that said, it can sometimes be difficult to get children and young people motivated to take part in sports and other exercise, but there are certainly ways to do so. This guide provides you with some top tips from our expert on how to encourage young people to stay active and remain invested in their physical welfare.
