Hello, and welcome to the last edition of the Wildern Weekly for this school year!

The end of term is fast approaching and we cannot believe how time has flown this year. Once more our students have shown commitment, energy, enthusiasm and a positive attitude to their learning; they embrace all the opportunities afforded to them. The school site has been a hive of activity, with smiling, eager faces enjoying all our summer activities offer including our Day to Create, Paultons Park and Sports Day to name but a few!

When we look back on this year we can see so many achievements from individual to team successes, major productions as well as concerts, dance showcases, day trips, experiences of higher education, visitors in lessons and MFL plays within school. All of this adds to the rich experiences we hope all students benefit from as they journey through the school.

On top of this, our students have been recognised for their energy, talent and hard work across the year with over 216,153  positive e-refs and that is not counting all the postcards that arrive on the door mat! This is such an amazing achievement!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well done to all the Year 10s for completing their DofE Assessment this weekend. As a leadership team we were really impressed with a lot of the teamwork and leadership qualities that were on show..

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Year 7 art students have been creating Low Relief ceramic tiles in the Art Nouveau style inspired by the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi - look at these beautiful examples!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are holding the final Preloved uniform sale of this academic year in the gym, this Friday (19th July), 3-4pm. The Year 11s who have just left generously donated all kinds of items, including PE kits, ties, skirts etc. If you did not manage to get what you needed at Induction Evening then this could be your chance before September. The sale will be first come, first served and cash only.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Tuesday, some of our Year 10 Hospitality students completed their Level 1 Barista Course, perfecting their coffee-making skills and acquiring valuable employability skills! A big thank you to @winchester_coffee_school for this amazing opportunity!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We regret to inform you that the price of a main school meal will increase by 20p to £3.20 for all students across our Trust schools, effective Monday, 2nd September. This change aligns with the recent price adjustments agreed upon across all Hampshire schools.

The new meal price reflects the impact of inflation, including rising food costs and other associated expenses. The current price has been maintained since June 2023.

We encourage all families to use the free school meals eligibility checker, which can be found here, to determine if they qualify for this entitlement.  We remain committed to providing the highest quality food for your children every day.

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have had to go into lockdown this morning to keep students in side whilst a health and safety concern was investigated in one of our buildings.

The lockdown lasted a short period of time and the school remains open. However, the bottom corridor of Block 3 will remain closed until the end of term whilst further checks and work is carried out.

As always we are incredibly proud of the students' reaction to the lockdown.

House Championship 2024

Since September 2023 our students have been battling it out for our House Championship.  Through numerous Sporting Competitions, Academic Challenges, Charity events and Department Competitions.  The top spot has changed place eight times with each house at some point leading.

After a delay to the final result due to the School Closure last week with the water leak and KS3 sports Day yesterday.  The Winning house for 2024 was announced this morning with Driscoll winning with 153168 points.  They enjoyed a winners lunch in the Hall Period 4 today.

Getting ready for September

It is very important that we work together and have your full support to ensure that our children have the right attitude for learning, they are treating each other with care and respect and that they are keeping themselves safe online by making good decisions to stay away from damaging online influences. Please help your son or daughter to get off to a really successful start in September by making sure that they have:

The basic school equipment – a sensible school bag, black and green pen, pencil, ruler, calculator;

Correct school uniform

Correct PE/Dance kit

Parent Information Evening - Welcome to…

We would love parents to join us for these events - these will be about highlighting the important aspects of the year ahead for your child's year group and how we work as a partnership to support students throughout the year.

Water Safety Advice

Hampshire County Council have joined forces with the RNLI and the University of Portsmouth to get key water safety messages out to all secondary schools.

As Hampshire has about 230 miles of coastline, as well as many rivers, canals and lakes, it’s essential that young people know about water safety.

Every year, 300-400 people lose their lives by accidental drowning. It’s the third most common cause of death amongst children and young people. Two of the most common causes are cold water shock and rip currents. Hampshire have created a short information film identifying what to do in these situations that they hope will inform parents and young people. Please take the time to watch the film.

The key messages are below:

Cold water shock:

  • Remember to float
  • The cold water will catch your breathe
  • Don’t panic - keep calm
  • Try and relax
  • Shout for help

Rip currents (when the water pulls at your ankles):

  • Swim between lifeguard flags (if there are any)
  • Swim parallel to the shore
  • Shout for help

We know that these messages may not be new for some of you but we wanted to ensure that before the summer holidays these are revisited to ensure that everyone in our community knows how to keep safe.

Update from Hampshire Fire Service

We have received reports that there have been a number of small fires set in the locality recently. Schools across the trust have been contacted  to relay the message that this is unsafe and against the law. Fires have been set in the local parks and the area behind the Botleigh Grange Hotel.

As always we will work with the local policing team should any information be passed to us but we urge that if you witness any of this type of behaviour that you contact the local policing team as well.

We know that the large majority of the young people in the community behave beautifully and respectfully, however the minority that engage in these behaviours are putting themselves and others at risk. Please talk to your child about the dangers of playing with fire and the potential consequences.

Please remember, we can adapt the majority of meals to any dietary needs if we know in advance (your child can speak to kitchen staff by visiting the kitchen before 8:30am that day). Main A/B vegetarian options are always available - just ask Dan and his team.

The cost of some of our products are going up after Easter due to an increased cost for fresh ingredients we purchase to cook and bake.

10 Top Tips for Parents and Educators: Encouraging Healthy Friendships

It’s common for young people to have comparatively less of an understanding of social conventions. While children can benefit from this to some degree – making friends at the drop of a hat – this can also generate a good deal of confusion regarding certain aspects of any relationships that they form.

As we know when children have free time they often spend it on-line especially when on holiday. To help protect your child from inappropriate online influences over the summer and help them to be in the best frame of mind to learn when back at school, we know that many parents find the following very helpful:

Limit online time to sensible amounts; only allow age appropriate APPs

Help ensure a good night’s sleep by preventing your child having access to their phone overnight;

Install age appropriate settings on internet use. The following links provides advice on setting parental controls:
