Hello and welcome to this week’s Wildern Weekly.
My name is Dr Griscti-Perry and I am the Director of Learning for Science. Myself and my colleagues in the science department strive to create an engaging and inspiring learning environment where students can develop a deep understanding of scientific concepts. Science education is crucial for developing essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and data analysis, which are invaluable in all aspects of life. Beyond the classroom, we provide exciting enrichment opportunities to further enhance students' scientific learning. These include:
- GCSE Science Live: An interactive and engaging live show designed to bring GCSE Science to life.
- The Faraday Competition: A prestigious national competition that challenges students to think creatively and apply their scientific knowledge.
- Exciting trips to the Winchester Science Centre, Legoland, Kew Gardens, and local STEM fairs, providing hands-on experiences and inspiring future scientists.
I look forward to working with you and your children throughout their scientific journey at Wildern School.

Grand Opening of the Student Hub at Wildern School: A New Era of Student Support and Wellbeing
The grand opening of Wildern School’s Student Hub on 3rd February 2025, marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to supporting the wellbeing and success of our students. After months of careful planning and development, this new space will serve as a dedicated resource for students to access support, develop their skills, and feel empowered to succeed both academically and personally.
The Student Hub is a reflection of our core values, focusing on student wellbeing and mental health. It provides a safe, inclusive environment where young people can feel valued, supported, and ready to take on the challenges of life and learning.
A Vision for the Future
As we look ahead, we’re excited to continue nurturing our students' development and ensuring that every individual has access to the tools and support they need to succeed. The Student Hub represents a new chapter in Wildern School’s journey, one where student success goes hand in hand with emotional and social wellbeing.
The official opening of the Student Hub was timed to coincide with Children's Mental Health Week. Students have access to a wide range of support, a broad curriculum with a strong focus on the arts and numerous co-curricular activities. In recognition of Children's Mental Health Week, students have been able to get involved in additional mindfulness activities throughout the week. These included yoga, mandala making, and drama therapy.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science
On 11 February 2025, we will celebrate the 10th International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This date was chosen to honor the birthday of Marie Curie, a pioneering physicist and chemist who made groundbreaking contributions to the fields of radioactivity and nuclear physics. Marie Curie remains an inspirational figure for women in science as the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields (Physics and Chemistry).
Below we would like to celebrate some amazing women who have revolutionised our understanding of the world. Their dedication, perseverance, and groundbreaking discoveries continue to inspire future generations of scientists.
-
Rosalind Franklin: Her crucial X-ray diffraction images of DNA were instrumental in determining its double helix structure, a discovery that earned Francis Crick and James Watson the Nobel Prize. During her lifetime, Franklin was not credited for her key role, but years later she is recognized as providing a pivotal piece of the DNA story.
-
Flossie Wong-Staal: A groundbreaking virologist whose work was crucial in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Wong-Staal was the first scientist to clone HIV and create a map of its genes, which led to a test for the virus. Thanks to her research, the first tests to diagnose HIV were developed, which significantly helped to better manage and prevent the spread of this illness.
- Jane Goodall: A renowned primatologist who revolutionized our understanding of chimpanzee behavior through years of patient observation in Tanzania.
- Katherine Johnson: A brilliant mathematician whose calculations were crucial for the success of early NASA missions, including the first American in space.

There are many ways you can foster your child’s interest in STEM subjects:
- Discuss what they are learning in their science lessons
- Enter the annual STEM fair launching in March
- Join STEM club- after school every Monday in room 306
- Read science themed literature, for example Dragonfly Girl by Marti Leimbach, Kay's Marvellous Medicine: A Gross and Gruesome History of the Human Body and The Extraordinary Elements.
- Visit Winchester Science Centre or the London Science museum

A huge thank you to all the employers, students and parents who made our Apprenticeship Fair last night such a success. It was fantastic to see so many young people exploring career opportunities, networking with industry professionals, and taking the next steps toward their future.
Despite a number of cancellations, the event was still a fantastic opportunity for students to connect with employers and providers to gain valuable insights into apprenticeship pathways.

Safer Internet Day - Tuesday 11 February 2025
Every year at Wildern we raise awareness of internet safety through Safer Internet Day.
This year’s theme ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online’ focuses on the increasing risks we all face from online scammers and gives students the opportunity to understand the risks: how to identify them and how to deal with potential threats.
All students will be discussing Safer Internet Day in their lessons, with several Year 8 classes joining a live lesson in the Main Hall on Tuesday 11 February from Tech She Can - a charity, working together with industry, government, and schools to improve the ratio of women in technology roles.
