Hello and welcome to this week's Wildern Weekly!

My name is Miss Thomas and as our school receptionist. I am often the first person you see or speak to when you connect with our school and it is a role I truly love. My goal is to make sure your experience, whether you are a student, parent or visitor, is as smooth and welcoming as possible.

My responsibilities are wide-ranging, from answering your calls and guiding visitors to supporting our amazing staff and students daily.  These responsibilities consist of managing enquiries and directing you to the right person, scheduling appointments for staff and parents or visitors in our meeting rooms diary, helping students who have mislaid their timetables and directing them to their correct classroom.

Each day I have a ‘Runner’, who is a Year 8 student that has been given the privilege of helping me ensure any urgent messages are delivered to classrooms and any items dropped into reception are reunited with the student.

I am dedicated to providing a friendly and efficient service, so whether you have a quick question, need to drop something off, or simply want to say hello, please know you are always welcome. I look forward to continuing to support our wonderful school!

Experience of a Workplace

As our Year 10 students return from their work experience placements, we are thrilled to share how incredibly well they have done. Across a wide range of industries and workplaces, students represented the school with maturity, enthusiasm, and professionalism and the feedback so far has been nothing short of outstanding.

Employers have already begun sending in glowing reports, praising students for their commitment, attitude, and willingness to learn. From stepping up to real-world challenges to making strong first impressions, our students have truly made us proud.

We are currently gathering all the fantastic feedback received, and highlights will be featured in the Careers section of the next Wildern Weekly. Students will be able to access their individual feedback through their Unifrog account, and we encourage them to complete the student reflection form as a valuable resource for future reference.

A huge thank you to all parents and carers for your support in preparing students for their placements. Your encouragement has played a key role in making this a valuable and memorable experience for them.

If you, your employer, or any contacts are in a position to offer a placement we would love to hear from you careers@wildern.org. Stay tuned for the full feature next week!

District Athletics

A very successful day of athletics today! We couldn't have asked for more from the students; they were superb. From looking after our environment, being organised for each race, supporting each other and trying their hardest in really tough heat - i cannot commend them any higher!

Drowning Prevention Week

The heatwave is definitely upon us. With students out and about at the weekends and being in a local area being surrounded by gorgeous waterfronts and rivers, it's worth a reminder about water safety.

No child should drown, and with the right water safety education – such as knowledge of the Water Safety Code – accidental drownings are preventable. Drowning Prevention Week is deliberately timed ahead of the school summer holidays when children spend more time outdoors and when vital water safety skills can help keep children safe.

Follow this link below to read about how using the water code can help save lives!

Unifrog - Years 9 & 10

A letter has been emailed home today to parents of students in Years 9 and 10, informing them that they will be the first year groups to receive limited access to their child’s Unifrog platform. The email includes a helpful presentation outlining the platform’s key features and functionality.

While this access does not provide the parents with the full range of tools available to students, it enables parents to engage with and support their child’s career and education planning.

Alternatively, parents may choose to register for a student account themselves. This will provide full access to all the tools and resources available on Unifrog; however, please note that this would be a separate, standalone account and would not be linked to your child’s profile.

Please see the menu for our hot food options for next week.

The main school meal deals are £3.20 which is in line with all Hampshire schools. In a meal deal, students can get one of the meal choices below with a bottle of plain water and a cookie or piece of fruit.

  • either of the hot meal options,
  • a jacket potato,
  • a pasta pot,
  • a chicken or beef burger,
  • a salad pot (from the salad bar)

We encourage all families to use the free school meals eligibility checker, which can be found here, to determine if they qualify for this entitlement.

Please remember, we can adapt the majority of meals to any dietary needs if we know in advance (your child can speak to kitchen staff by visiting the kitchen before 8:30am that day). Main A/B vegetarian options are always available - just ask Dan and his team.

What Parents & Educators Need to Know about In-Game Chat

Online gaming enjoys an apparently ever-increasing level of popularity, and many players are eager to connect with one another as they enjoy a friendly competition or go for the win side by side. Whether it’s to strategise and coordinate, or simply have a chat as you indulge in your hobby, the fact remains that plenty of games now offer means for their players to talk to one another, be that in a text or voice format.

Unfortunately, this functionality – which is used to connect with strangers just as often as it is with friends – poses several risks to younger players, and it’s vital for parents and educators to understand these safety concerns. This free guide offers expert advice on the issues that may arise when using in-game chat, and lets you know how to safeguard the children in your care as they make use of this technology. We've also produced a version of this guide in podcast format, so you can access the same superb support while you're on the go.
