Welcome to this weeks Wildern Weekly!

Hello all, It is nice to have this opportunity to introduce myself to you.  My name is Mr Nash and I have taken over the role of Director of Progress and Acheivement for Year 11. This is a role that I have had experience with at my previous school, so I am looking to bring the lessons and strategies I have learnt and apply them to the Wildern Way.

As I am sure you are already aware we have our Year 11 Parents Information Evening coming up on Tuesday 16 September, this would be a great opportunity for me to meet you and for you to also be able to put a face to the name with any future correspondence we may have.

Finally I must comment on how impressed I am with the attitude that Year 11 have returned to school this year with. Many teachers and support staff have had nothing but amazing things to say me to about how settled and focused the students seem to be. Hopefully this is something that together we can build upon allowing all of Year 11 to make their own success stories.

SnackTember

This September, we are excited to join The British Nutrition Foundation’s Snack-tember campaign—a month dedicated to helping families explore, try and make healthier, more affordable snacks at home.

The BNF highlights five “hero” snack recipes designed to be both budget-friendly and fun to make; Pizza Muffins, Homemade Popcorn, Fruit and Oat Bites, Tortilla Chips and Dip and Crunchy Veg with Beany Dip. Click here for the recipes - you'll need to scroll down once on the page.

Nutritious snacks like these can help keep children’s energy levels steady, which not only supports their physical health but also boosts concentration, positive moods and readiness to learn in the classroom.

All of these recipes can be made with simple, cost-effective ingredients—think oats, canned beans, tortillas, popcorn kernels, and veggies from your local supermarket. They’re great for involving children in the kitchen and encouraging both independence and healthy habits.

Keep an eye on our socials this month—we’ll be sharing step-by-step recipe ideas and tips so you and your child can try them together at home!

Charity

Fed up of trying to find a spare £1 for non-uniform days? This year we have set up an option to pay a one-off amount to cover all of this year’s non-uniform charity days. The £6 minimum donation covers them all and you can donate more if you are particularly keen to support the selected charities for this year:

  • Papyrus - 26 September
  • Show Racism the Red Card - 17 October
  • Save the Children (Christmas Jumper Day) - 12 December
  • Bright Monday - 19 January
  • Red Nose Day - 21 March
  • Southampton Hospitals Charity - 3 July

We are also kicking off our charity year with a big Race for Life 5Km House Competition event on Wednesday 24 September out on the field after school, raising money for Cancer Research UK.

This is a fantastic event to start the school year! The race can be walked or run and students will need to be ready for 3:30pm. Changing rooms nearest the field will be available. Sign up is via a Google Form shared on each tutor’s Google Classroom. Please encourage your child to join us and every sponsorship or donation towards this worth cause is hugely appreciated - via our JustGiving page

Art & Design

Is your child interested in Art and Design and you are not sure how to support them?  Here are 7 ideas to help them…

Mobile Phone Safety

When was that last time you had a really good conversation with your young person about what is on their phone? The start of a school year is a great time to create new habits and reignite old ones. It is really healthy to:

  • Have open dialogue about what they are accessing
  • Check permissions (and locations) are still switched on
  • Talk about APPs and why they use them
  • Ask them if they/ their friends are ok online?
  • Keep phones out of bedrooms over night
  • Model good use as parents/carers, find other ways to engage the family.

If you have any concerns, contact us at school and we can signpost and support.

Work Experience Deadline Day

Students are strongly encouraged to contact a wide range of employers, ideally a large list across various sectors as statistically, the more companies approached, the greater the likelihood of securing a placement.

We also advise not limiting the search to just the sector the student hopes to work in long term, as all work experience provides valuable skills.

Casting a wider net increases the chances of securing multiple options, rather than being left with limited or no choices.

Parent Information Evening

Thank you all who attended last Tuesdays Work Experience Parent Information Evening, it was a fantastic turnout!

A follow-up letter, including links to the presentation and a guide for uploading placements will be shared via EduLink shortly.

October Half Term Activities

Following our letter at the end of last term, work has started to improve our school kitchen. Over the past 18 months, we've been fortunate to secure Condition Improvement Funding, allowing us to update all electrics, water, and lighting across the site. This work is nearing completion and should be finished by the end of 2025.

The next crucial phase involves a complete renovation of our school kitchen. This work is scheduled to begin in mid-August and will continue until the October half-term. As a result, we'll have a very limited catering offer during this period.

We are able to offer:

  • Sausage rolls
  • Chicken burgers
  • Beef burgers
  • Warm paninis
  • Jacket potatoes
  • Cold baguettes
  • Cold wraps
  • Bottled drinks
  • Biscuits
  • Flapjacks

Please remember, we can adapt the majority of meals to any dietary needs if we know in advance (your child can speak to kitchen staff by visiting the kitchen before 8:30am that day). Main A/B vegetarian options are always available - just ask Dan and his team.

We encourage all families to use the free school meals eligibility checker, which can be found here, to determine if they qualify for this entitlement.

It’s a superb space for people to consume content that they’re interested in. As a result, this astronomically popular platform has had a huge social impact: influencing online culture on a global scale and creating new celebrities.

In our guide, you'll find tips on avoiding potential risks such as connecting with strangers, inappropriate content and high visibility.
